At the range, the target goes in a rack and the person in the butts is behind a berm.
Back in 72, when I was in USMC officer training we did the rifle range with targets similar to these. Working in the butts was always a challenge. There wasn't much risk of getting hit with a round, but our standard response when we got poor butt service was to crank a few rounds in the top of the berm. That would spray dirt and dust onto the butt crew............ Ah, the smaller pleasures of life.
Back then, I could put 9 of 10 M-14 rounds (7.62MM) in a 12 inch target at 500 yards. URRRRRAH!
