That sucks Doug, Layoffs is one of the things that keeps me playing at small business, or really I guess the threat of layoffs.

My suggestion at this point would be BARTER if possible.

No nothing of your skills, equipment etc. but as a general statement, very general and Alan L obviously excluded, CPA's do not hang out at TBN. (I now expect a long list of posters that are CPA's on TBN)

You may very well find that speaking with some CPA's etc. explaining what is going on, that you may find that they would be willing to do a little trading.

While it may seem like a lot of money now to consult a CPA, it will seem like nothing when you are dealing with the consequences of not doing it.......

Trust me a bit on that one,,,,, Been there Done That,,,, Had to pay the piper when they told me tooooooo.

I hear you Alan. Actually, there was a time when my older daughter... a highly successful business major... was working toward becoming a CPA... but then she took a nasty left turn into marketing and the rest is history. No free CPA for dear old dad!

What amazes me most so far is how different it is planning and preparing for lay-off than actually *BEING* laid-off. Everything looks good on paper until you actually have to go out and do it. Then you find out that there are a million complicated, costly and time consuming obstacles between here and where you want to be. Licensing, insurance, incorporation, legal matters, endless fees, taxation, record keeping... even complying with silly local zoning laws.

Sometimes I think the system is purposefully rigged to keep little, law-abiding people like me from pursuing their own independent business dreams and survival. I find that thought in modern day America to be very, very depressing. :(

Doug you hit the nail on the head. I hope your situation gets better. I hope you start your business and it takes off and provides you some relief. In the mean time don't give up. Keep figuring out what you need to figure out.
Keep us posted.

Don't get discouraged, Dougster. I suspect that much of your frustration with the red tape might be a function of your state and local governments. I can't help you with that, but I can tell you that you should be able to get a good consult with a CPA at no charge. You should take advantage of it.
