Where I live in CA, the base tax is 1%, but "extra" local assessments usually push the rate upwards. Most houses in this area average around 1.6 to 1.8%. And then there is the sales tax at 7.75%, road assessments, trash collection, energy surcharges, etc.

Of course, an "average" house price here is not equivalent to most other areas, so that 1.8% can get pretty hefty for just a median priced house. Median price last month in the nearest town was $497,000 and that is for a modest house on 1/4 acre or less.

I would say that it is what you get in return, during your lifetime, for the tax money that counts.
