I agree - it is important to decide on what your mission is, and then do it well.

We are about tractors and the rural lifestyle, per se.
To All - Speaking as a moderator (not speaking for all moderators), this is the reason, more often than not, why non-tractor, non-rural lifestyle threads get closed sooner than some think appropriate. I've stated this before, when this topic has arisen, that people only have so much time they can/will dedicate to Internet activities such as participating in discussion boards. If TBN allowed these types of topics, most people, human nature being what it is, would spend more and more time responding (or initiating) a political/religion/etc. thread and ignoring the tractor forums. Why? Because most of us just 'know' that one more post and we will convince others our position is correct. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif Eventually, people who come to TBN for tractor related assistance would see their questions go unanswered and eventually leave for other sites (assuming there are other tractor related sites that are worthwhile - I am not aware of any. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif )

Re: TBN is a place for politics [It\'s a little long]

When a tractor releated thread drifts off topic every once in a while into a political discussion, it's nice to read the viewpoints of other people. Unfotunately, if a full time political forum was to be created here, there would be too many current friends turned into enemies.

Let's keep it the way it is-- if a thread drifts off topic, I feel it's fine to talk about other things, so long as we stick with topics and try hard to avoid the use of the names of specific people or political parties, and we do not resort to personal attacks we someone presents a desenting opinion. It's the same way it's done with gear vs hydro, or 2wd vs 4wd, or drilling you ROPS or not to drill... /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif ...and we're all still friends after all of those discussions.

As everyone here knows, I can be very opinionated, but I try hard to keep my political and religious views off of here, or at least I try to avoid specifics and keep to general statements. I have a personal rule when making posts not to use names of candidates or names of political parties during the times I do respond to the off topic threads, and I think that's a good way to stay out of arguements during the times that we stray off topic a little.

And I agree, with the reponses, that tbn is best without the politics. I really appreciate all the hard work that makes this such a fine site. Let's not spoil it!

Re: TBN is a place for politics [It\'s a little long]

I wasn't going to reply then decided I would.. I just left a huge helicopter net (26,000) members plus.. The reason I left was strictly politics. I was treasurer for that group over five years and found it difficult at best to perform that duty towards the end. Yes, I am saying, that the politics and arguing got so out of hand (on a daily basis) and more times than not, an hourly one, that I had it hard at times to perform what the finance committee asked of me. We have had members fist fight over politics. When it gets to that point, it's already too late. The chopper guys are extremely patriotic to the point that anyone with a minimal questions (ie) why do you blame the politicians or is Jane Fonda really a traitor and so on, I've seen this get way out of hand. I myself have held off sending requested monies by committee because someone thinks Fonda was great. When your personal thoughts cloud an operation, it's time to move on and leave it behind. I did send what was required, but not in the timely manner I once was known for. Politics here, will be as deadly as that particular net. I saw this coming with the draft card question and it went on more than I thought it would.
For the guy who first proposed this question, PM me and I will see if I can get you to monitor that chopper net. They may not allow it, although a good share of them are teachers and professors as I type. They use to spend all their time (me too) answering young kids and their questions. Usually, it was a task given by the teachers and they would send us many questions. I use to enjoy answering kids questions and all of us were required to have a disclaimer, (my point of view only, not speaking for others)) Many kids wrote back, thanks, I got my first A mark, or more importantly, I/we didn't know that.. Part of the answers we also HAD TO show proof of answer and where we came up with the proof. I suggest to Muhammad and others here, to maintain basically the tractor net and ocassional off topic questions/answers.. Don't allow it to go as far as I once did.

Re: TBN is a place for politics [It\'s a little long]

A couple of hours ago, I might have liked the idea of a political section. But, I just blew my cool and ragged out on the "high taxes" thread. I'm so angry right now that if you spit on me it would sizzle. I don't like to be that way, and some of these people are my friends -- at least, I see them that way. I don't like to see them "naked" (with their views hanging out), and I don't suspect they like to see me that way, either. Let's stay in the closet.

Re: TBN is a place for politics [It\'s a little long]

While my opinion of the value of these types of boards for democracy hasn't changed, my mind about a political topics section has changed. I am quite an idealist and seeing how well the Draft/Iraq thread went made me think that all political topics threads could go like that. OkeeDon so hot you could fry a steak on him makes me realize otherwise.

Oh well, it was just a thought. I'm glad that people with more experience are wise enough to know that politcs can rip a community like this apart.

Happy politics-free tractoring y'all! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
