dass, you did the right thing for the wrong reason - better than the reverse. Hydro,especially on small compacts is the way to go. It's safer, perfect for loader or tight places, wife and kids can do the lawn mowing, better resale and infinite creeper speeds better for tilling, snow plowing.

I'm a new tractor owner as well and I went with hydro for the reasons mentioned. Can anyone tell me what it means to have a "live PTO"? I really don't know the difference.

On old tractors with gear shift and clutches, the PTO could not be engaged without releasing the clutch. The term "live" means that you can engage the PTO independently of the drive train going to the wheels or clutch. If the tractor is running and you select the PTO, it WILL rotate.
I believe your tractor has a clutch even though it also has hydrostatic tranny. You will always be able to engage the PTO regardless of whether you are in gear or the clutch is depressed. The same goes for your hydraulic lift. If you can raise the lift with the clutch depressed, it is considered "live." On some old tractors (Ford 8Ns and Ferguson TO-20s) you had to release the clutch before the PTO or hydraulics would work.

Live PTO
Then my tractor must not have a live PTO since it quits running if I depress the clutch?? I have a New Holland model 1925.

bmark, I'm not familiar with your tractor, but some tractors have a two stage clutch. With the PTO engaged and the tractor in gear, you can push the clutch part of the way down to stop the movement of the tractor and/or to shift gears with the PTO still turning, and pushing clutch the rest of the way down stops both the PTO and power to the wheels. If yours does not have such a clutch, then you do not have a live PTO.

I recently purchased a TC-18 with a manual transmission. I wouldn't trade this tractor for the world. I use mine to brushhog with and not having the live pto doesn't really bother me. I also skid alot of trees and use a rear blade quite abit. I couldn't see spending the extra money for the hydro plus i'm an old farm boy and like the manual transmission anyway. It's hard to teach an old dog new tricks.
