TC 29D arrived today

John,

I'm not familiar with the covers on the JD units but think that the cover on the NH units sounds different. The NH cover attaches to the PTO housing, not the PTO shaft. It not only keeps the shaft clean but also prevents any clothing contact with the shaft. This could be considered a safety plus as the PTO could be engaged yet the cover is not turning, of course we would never forget and leave a PTO engaged without an implement attached.../w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

John Deere hinged PTO shield

Dave,

This is what JD uses as a "shield", but I thought they are talking about a "plastic" slip-on cover that goes over the spline... /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

Re: PTO cover

The NH PTO cover is hard gray plastic. Looks almost like a cap to go on the end of some PVC pipe. Makes no contact with the spline. Mine has a somewhat squared-off end to allow gripping with a wrench (though I've never needed it). Fortunately, it fits in the miniscule tool box that came with the tractor.

John Miller,

Yes and yes. The talk was about a plastic cover (thread on, not slip) that is in addition to the hinged shield around the PTO area. Don't have a digital camera but might be able to borrow one from my brother this weekend and post a pic (unless someone here beats me to it) of the NH PTO area and PTO shaft cover. The NH website is pretty useless when it comes to pics of the "business end" of the tractor.

Dave,

You have to remember most of the time "my brain" is engaged in utility tractor mode.../w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Just about everyone I know, usually has an implement hooked on the rear of their tractor including PTO driveshaft most of the time... so "we" don't have a need for a PTO plastic cover... because it's in use... /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif

So in a way, I just found it somewhat humorous of the concern over a "PTO slip cover"... /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

I got it off. The dealer said wrench it and if it breaks he will give me a new one. It came off with a pipe wrench and some effort. The threads seem fine and it went back on and off OK. The tractor is a blast. If only I could find more time to use it. Thanks again.

I know we have beat this PTO subject so thin it's "threadbare", but here is a definitive photo of the NH plastic PTO cover on my TC45D. On my old Jubilee (Ford NAA) the PTO cover was essentially the same, but made of metal. The Ferguson To-20 I grew up operating was also metal and threaded. When I installed an overrun clutch (ratchet) on my Jubilee, the PTO cover wouldn't fit, so it is in my garage taking up shelf space. Just for your info and anyone else who might be curious, here's the photo./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Re: Your photo, noted change in 45D

Looking at your photo reminded me of a difference I noticed on my new TC45D and yours. The drawbar bracket has been changed to a new style. (looks cast vs fabricated from flat stock) The PTO pump for my Woods 9000 hoe would not hook up and lock like it did on my old TC40D. The bracket has been redesigned for reasons I do not know. I guess I'll call Woods and see if they have a replacement bracket for the pump. Anyone know why the change? My guess is cost only.

Re: Your photo, noted change in 45D

Interesting difference...hmmm? I think I prefer the fabricated just because I have seen so many broken pieces which were cast. However, it just might be my unsubstantiated prejudice here. But different geometry making the Woods pump not fit is pretty serious. Can you post a picture? I wonder if this is a "limited" run or a permanent change./w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif
