My TC-29D has had a hard shifting problem since I got it.. The problem is not bad enough right now to bring it back for warranty service but a pain especially for the wife.. The problem is shifting into the ranges. Sometimes it will not go into any or all ranges and we have to jerk the shifter around to get it to go into range. Also, since the NH Dealer does not have the oil fileter for my tractor in stock, Has to come from the other side, does any one know of an aftermarked unit that would fit..

Claus, don't force it into gear. Those gears are not synchromesh. If it doesn't go in easily, ease down on the hydro pedal (either forward or reverse with your foot OFF the clutch) to turn the gears just a little bit, let off the hydro pedal and then try shifting again. Sometimes you may have to do it 2 or 3 times before it goes easily, but it will when you have the gears lined up right.

Bird is correct (He just happens to own the wrong color of tractor. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif). I have to "bump" my hydro pedal (fwd or rev) to get the range to easily shift and also sometimes have to do the same for the 4wd engagement. I don't have a clutch on my TC45D, but unlike a standard transmission, for engaging the hydro range, you need to have your foot OFF the clutch. It doesn't seem right, but it is. I think others will also verify this. So relax, there is nothing wrong with your tractor.

Naw, JimI, I'm not the one who has the wrong color./w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif But since I have the right color and a cousin who has a TC29D, I've read both manuals (and was there when the salesman delivered my cousin's tractor). The salesman said you don't need to use the clutch to shift ranges; however, both the Kubota and the TC29D manuals say to use the clutch. The fact of the matter is that I don't think it makes a bit of difference whether you use the clutch or not so long as you're not holding that hydro pedal down and spinning those gears enough to make them grind. And of course, the difficulty with shifting ranges, for new operators, is generic; applies to all the colors./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

My dealer said the same thing as the other posts above ease the hydro pedal slightly then try your range selector again, I find it easier to use the reverse on the hydro pedal it seems slip in easier. good luck.

try using this old ford part number at a napa store e9nn6714aa this number subs to 86546618 under new holland and is the oil filter for your tractor they should be able to cross the old number with no problem

...and since we are on this topic, Bird. Can you tell me what function a clutch has with a hydro tranny? I just can't figure a real use and suspect it might just be easier to leave it there for spacing considerations. What do you think?

JimI, I don't think you'd need a clutch for the hydro, but if they did away with the clutch on a lot of these compact tractors (mine included, of course), they would have to go to the hydraulically operated PTO clutch. In other words, right now I think most of us have the PTO driven directly so you have to use the clutch to engage it.

Howdy!

I think Bird has got it. The only real function the clutch on my 29D has is to engage/stop the mid or rear PTO, and to shift from "Auto" FWD to "Locked" FWD.

I always shift the ranges with the clutch, out of habit, but I know they can be shifted without the clutch.

Hmmm...You mean you don't have a live PTO? I guess I just assumed most mid-to-large tractors had live PTO these days, but it sounds like that is not the case. Now it makes sense about the clutch. Thanks, Bird (and DieselJay).
