I have a TC 29 DA with a manual tranny that has a very nasty squeal in, I think, the trans. At about 1000 to 1800 RPM or so, all of a sudden it starts and can be heard a ways away. Very annoying and sounds like a dry bearing.

Won't do it in neutral, changes tone slightly when reved up and is set off with engine RPM, definately related to engine RPM and not ground speed, any gear, PTO on or off no difference. I can run the backhoe for hours and not hear it but if I drive along it starts. A couple hundred hours ago it was a little occasional chirp, now it's getting serious.

Tractor has about 350 hours on it and this is getting worse. I checked the tranny oil and it's full, so is the hydraulic oil that is checked dwith the dipstick behind the seat. It looks like the tranny is in two sections and share the oil, is this right?

I'm wondering if there is a weak bearing in the tranny that others have had to fix? Any ideas?

Throw out bearing?

I did grease the zerk on the front shaft. No change. And seems to be more related to engine speed than ground speed as it will happen in low range or high range at about the same RPM.

The throwout bearing can't be it because it does it clutch in or out or with just enough pedal to take up the play. All with no affect. With clutch in it squeals till the tractor stops. It will come on while driving along or while slipping the clutch in high range to get moving.

I can't make it happen with it stopped or I could climb around and look for it better. Man, this is really loud, not some hydraulic relief valve or starving oil pump. WAY louder.

Thanks for the replies. Any more thoughts?

Sorry to beat a dead horse, but I've been down this road. That driveshaft shield needs to be pretty well filled with grease in order for the upper seal not to get dry and loud. Pump a dozen or more pumps of grease into it and see what happens.

Is a brake hanging up?

Thanks Rick, I'll get serious with the grease gun.

I'm not where the tractor is right now, but as I recall, there is a rubber boot at the front axle, then a sleeved shaft with a zerk, then a smaller exposed shaft that enters the tranny.

The brakes have no affect on it. I can drag them or not with no affect.

That's it.

Try greasing the zerk on the front driveshaft shield.

Rick,

You were right and thank you very much!

I have greased that shield a number times while going over all the zerks I could find and even took the tractor in for its 50 hour service (included with the purchase), but the squeal just got worse. After getting your message I went in there and gave it over a dozen pumps and finally the grease appeared at the shaft where it exits the shield. Completely cured it. I put on about 10 hours in the last couple of days and its fine. I can't believe it was so simple and that I didn't get enough grease in there already.

Thanks again!

Guys -- Thanks for getting all this in the forum. I had the exact same issue with my new-to-me TC-29 over the weekend. The pump-grease-in-until-it-comes-out-of-the-driveshaft-sleeve solution was just the ticket.

Wonderful tractor by the way...
