TC 33D Turf tires

Has anyone bought turf tires and wheels separately ? Got the new tractor in oct...... I mowed once this fall with the r-4's and they did okay but I don't know what they will do in the spring. The dealer talked me into the r-4 tire as a good mix between turf and ag but I'm afraid they might be too aggressive when the lawn is soft...........Just wondered what I might expect to pay for the complete set as I want to keep the r-4's for winter use and changing them out twice a year wouldn't be too much of a chore....Tom

I suggest that you just try lowering the air pressure in your R4's, thus presenting a wider, softer, flotation foot print. I run the R4's on my TC29 all over lawns, including some fancy estates, without any major problems. Currently I am running 10 to 12 lbs in the rears, and 22 lbs in the front.

I was also told to go with R-4's when i purchased my TC33 and was told a set of turfs would be around $900 dealer cost. I think that was what they said. I too am unhappy with R-4's and wish I had got the turf. Your right, no matter what anyone tells you R-4's will tear up turf. Even in the most dry conditions my R-4's tore up the grass every time i turned and left grooves when I just drove over the grass.

Tom: When I bought my TC33D (DEC,2000), I got it with 7308 Loader(68" snow bucket) and 72" M/M mower. My dealer told me to go with turfs. While R4s appear to be a good compromise between ag's & turfs, they really don't make it for mowing or snow removal. While they are a great tire for a yard machine (loading, towing & lifting) they will require chains for snow removal and can be harsh on lawns especially in the Spring. When turf tires are equipped with ladder type highway chains front & rear, they perform very well with little or no damage to paved driveways. They also allow you to begin mowing chores earlier in the spring since they have the most forgiving footprint. I went with the dealers idea and am very happy I did so! I guess it depends on how you use your tractor. If you do a lot of mowing, I would bite the bullet and get a set of turfs. You could always list your R4s on ebay and get a chunck of money back.

No offense intended, but 'require' is too stong a verb. This is the second winter I have used my TC25D equipped with R4's for snow removal and have not needed chains. Occasionally, I need 4WD, depending upon how much snow I am pushing with the FEL, but never chains.

Since I have some time until mowing season I think I'll beat the bushes a little and see if I can find a set of new "Take offs" ....Maybe someone is going the other way.....Thanks to all !!....Tom

Hey Mike: I'm with you, the r4's work good,not quite as good s the ag but good just the same. Never had chains on but ofet in 4wd.same as the case backhoe

Tom, I've been reasonbly happy with my R4's, yearround. Yes they are a compromise, but that was what I expected. Actually, as far as my lawn is concerned, I'm very pleased. I had R1's before and they always did some damage, especially if it had rained within the last few days. Except if I make an extremely sharp turn I have never noticed any damage from the R4's.
