TC 40D blowing HYD fluid all over the grass!

Sam, are you sure your tractor is a 2001 model? Look under the left operator platform at the transmission housing and get the unit no. off the tag. If it starts with a 1, it's a 2001. If it starts with a 0 like mine does, it's a 2000. My tractor was built in July 2000 and I purchased it in February 2001.

Jim, here is the data on the tag, attached to my trans:

Unit: OD17D

Model: TC40D

Engine: 94160

Tractor number: G5D3398

I found the schematic of my Hyd pump with the gaskets, O-rings and seals on this site:

New Holland TC40DA 4 CYL COMPACT TRACTOR WITH CAB - NORTH AMERICA

Look under: Hydraulic system and then, Hydraulic pump.

Parts, 10-12- and 13 (circle 8 or butterfly wing) plastic gaskets were cracked and bad as was #14, the main hyd shaft seal.

Thanks! Sam

Unit 0D17D

0= 2000
D= April (A=jan, B=feb, C=mar, D=apr, etc)
17= 17th day of the month
D= Day Shift

Your tractor was built on April 17, 2000 on the day shift. Like me, you probably bought it in 2001 and thought that was the year model. It doesn't really matter, because years just don't mean that much in tractors. Knowing when it was built is the best reference date.

Jim, you are right, I bought it in 2001---so I assumed!!!!!!!!

Not to hijack my own thread but you probably know the answer to this Jim:

Will my Bush hog squealer SQ 72, my Farm Pride 84 inch finish mower and my Bush Hog 72 inch rototiller, work okay if I get a higher horsepower geared tractor of between 55 to 75 HP? I also found out that John Deere has a 60 and 66 HP tractor with their auto, called eHYDRO, with turbochargers, just in case I want to keep the automatic option going.

I don't want to ruin my PTO powered implements that have worked so well on my TC40D.

Take care! Sam

Sam, I think all those implements will work fine with a larger tractor, but you need to know the HP rating of their gearboxes and make sure you have the proper shearbolts and/or slip clutch adjustment to protect the implements. I always say it is like a 8 year old kid and a grown man fishing. They can both use 6 lb test line, but the grown man has to use restraint. I think that until you get into the mid-60s for HP, you will be fine with those implements. You might have to use some bushings if the links are cat II on the tractor, or you might be able to install cat II pins. With the mower, you'll have to be especially careful not to stress the A-frame in turns. Finess is the key.:thumbsup:

I will make sure that I get CAT 1 and the extendable hookup ends too!

**** Looking at a JD 4720 and 4520 and Kubota's today---Just for fun!

I looked at the NH Taskmaster 75 last week and was very impressed.

Still waiting on my parts for the hyd pump as of Fri 10-15-2010

Well, I looked at the JD 4720 and the 4520 and was totally unimpressed. The cheapness showed everywhere but in the drivetrain, engine and loader. The "Plastic" that is used everywhere is maybe 1/8 inch thick and is very fragile looking as are all of the operator controls, except the eHydro and brake controls. I'll pass.

The Kubota's on the other hand, were very impressive, in every detail and lots cheaper.

Next week I'll look at Case and Mahindra.

Fun-fun-fun!

My Hyd parts kit came in!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Looking at new tractors is a lot of fun! Every time I do though I always want to "Supersize" my next one! I like em big! But can't afford em big! I'm 6ft-5inches tall and 350 lbs plus of solid corn fed, country boy TABLE muscle and I enjoy my comfort. Mom used to say that I'm just big boned! Ha ha ha!

I really can't believe some of the cheapness (not asking price) in these compact tractors! Switches and levers so fragile looking a 10 year old would break them in a week. How about fenders made of plastic---not fiberglass like my TC but 1/8 inch thick plastic!!!! 3 point attachments that look anorexic and brittle and cheap. Seats that maybe 2/3's of my plump butt could fit on. My TC is like a Cadillac compared to these Yugo's!

All of these MFG's now have their utility (cheap) lines, probably brought about by the world recession but some of them sure look like they wouldn't last for very long.

I still don't know if I'll keep my TC or get another new tractor. Right now, I'm in love with the NH Workmaster 75!!!

I went to the dealer and picked up my Hydraulic pump overhaul kit yesterday. The entire "KIT" consisting of a bunch of o-rings, 4 special gaskets and the main pump shaft seal, would fit in a typical "sandwich baggie" and costs almost $200 with tax! Aside from the 4 special, figure 8 looking gaskets, all of the rest of the kits o-rings and the shaft seal could be purchased anywhere for I bet under $50. The whole "kit" probably weighs 4 ounces.

I will do the pump reseal tomorrow!

Take care! Sam

Well, she's fixed and works great! All systems are go and the TC operates just like new!

After I installed the Hydraulic pump repair kit, I still had lots of work to do. Since hydraulic fluid had been pumped under pressure into my engine oil, I of course drained the oil sump and installed a new oil filter. I also drained all hydraulic fluid from the engine and replaced the HST and the main HYD filters. I also replaced the fuel filter, which was REAL ugly and blew out the 2 air filters. I drained the radiator and put new 50-50 antifreeze in. I added some diesel fuel conditioner and fired it up! No leaks nor HYD noise of any kind and everything works real smoothly. I drove it down the paved road in front of my farm and praised the LORD that I'm able to fix things!!!!!

I'd like to thank everyone that commented and helped me, since the problem first started.

Take care, Sam
