Have any of you TC owners listened to the tractor when you have the posi locked in? While piling heavy drifts, I noticed that the posi made a clicking noise while it was engaged. Here is a little of what was going on:
* the front assist was engaged
* the wheels began to lose traction and I engaged the posi
* the normal chatter occurred & both wheels began driving
* the posi peddal stayed engaged as it should
* bringing the HST to reverse disengaged it

What I began to notice was that the chatter was still going on as I pushed. I have used the posi in the past, while box scraping, and never really noticed the chatter before. I know other manual transmission Fords only chattered while engaging and not while both wheels were driving. Thanks in adance for your insight!

marty,My little TC21D is hydro and I do here the click when the posi-lock engages and some times I here the pop when it disengages but either I didn't hear it will piling topsoil or it didn't chatter...plus I wasn't in wet conditions like your self so slipping pretty much stopped when I used the posi-lock to help really dig in...course now when it thaws out here better her in bama I'll have to go back out try and hear it...Thats if it will dry up enough....Darn one more reason to ride the tractor..../w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Marty, I read your post a couple of times, then went and checked my OM. I had never noticed the differential lock remaining engaged after I had released it.
The OM says that it can occur, if one wheel is turning at a faster speed than the other. To disengage, the manuel recomends raising or disengaging the implement or apply and release the brake pedal for the slipping wheel. I guess the thing is to return both wheels to the same speed. It would seem like your method of bringing the HST to reverse would do this, but maybe not.
As I said, I've never had the differential lock to remain engaged, but then I've only had to use it a couple of times. Never on snow or ice. It clicks when engaged, and stops when I let off on the pedal.

With my TC33, I have noticed the locking-differential staying engaged after lifting my foot off the pedal. Many times if continuing in the same direction, I may take my foot off the little pedal altogether. It appears to sometimes require changing direction or applying the clutch (if I can remember where it is). I think that if the pressure is not totally released from the rear axle gears, the gear will stay in place from the pressure. When moving the HST pedal back to neutral, and not applying the clutch, I think that pressure still can remain on the drive system - especially if stopped on any slight grade, the transmission appears to "hold" the tractor. This just speculative observations on my part. I have also experience some "clanging" when the the locking dif. is not properly alligned/engaged due to the operator...
