Tractor
JD 4300 w/ FEL
Hey guys. My buddy w/ the tc24 needs help with a problem he's having. He will be joining this site tonight, but asked me to post his problem.
(If I get this right) TC24 hst ( 03 or 04) He was backing up an incline in low when the tractor started to sputter and finally stalled out. It had 1/4 tank gas, so he filled it up. Seemed allright for a bit, then started again. It straightens out when the ground starts to level out again. He also noticed that the FEL seems to have a lack in power compared to before. Not sure if they are connected, but they both came up about the same time. I guess it had problems lifting wet dirt that it easily lifted before. Any idea or thoughts would be appreciated. I think he will be joining this conversation soon, but wanted me to post to get some thoughts first. Thanks!

Thanks for the help everyone. If anyone has any other ideas please advise. The tractor only has 70 hours on it, I have a filter but haven't changed it yet. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
Looks like rico304 is getting close!!!

You may want to bleed the fuel line - if you sucked air, it won't run right untill you bleed it out. The procedure is in the manual - basically you "crack" the fuel lines downstream of the fuel pump & crank the starter for a while, then tighten & cross your fingers. There is usually a fitting just downstream of the fuel pump before a "manifold" that distributes it to the injectors, sometimes you need to crack the injectors as well.

Good luck

Diesel engine problems are almost always related to fuel - bad fuel, dirty filter, air in the line etc.

That sounds right I think it did suck air.
Thanks Hazmat

I have stalled my TC24 out on slopes more times than I can count. 1 time I was out of fuel. Every other time it happened it was related to the seat safety. When going up or down an incline you tend to lean forward in the seat on a TC24 because the operators platform is fairly small, you put weight on the front edge of the seat, that allows the rear of the seat to lift up about a 1/2 inch and the safety interlock thinks that you fell off the tractor because it does not sense weight on the seat!

I found if I use my seatbelt I NEVER stall the tractor on an incline. If I don't use a seatbelt I ALWAYS stall out on an incline.

Also, the fuel intake is at the back of the fuel tank, if the tank is 1/3 full or less and the incline is sharp, the fuel will move forward and starve the engine of diesel.

Change the fuel filter now as when you change it you will have to bleed the injectors each time. In manual find bleeder plug ( looks like a bolt head) on injector pump. loosen it and crank engine over; if it starts that is ok; loosen it till you see bubbles or fuel coming out; you should not see bubbles at end just fuel; retighten bleeder plug and it will run just fine. remember that each time you change the fuel filter you have to bleed the injector pump. Change fuel filter as manual states or even sooner. Diesel fuel picks up water easily. I change my fuel filter about every 50 hours. Learn to inspect the glass bowl often as you will see the crude and water if it is present.

The only time any of my diesels have ever stalled out was a fuel issue... either water in fuel.. clogged filter, or not enough fuel.. etc.. Check for water seperator, and bleed screws.

When I had similar problems with my TC18, the sediment bulb was
about one third filled with water. Drained the bulb, and
replaced the fuel filter at the same time. Problem disappeared.

Did anyone experience the lack of power to the FEL, or was it just engine sputtering? I was curious if fuel issues would make the FEL weaker too. I'm sure it probably goes hand in hand.
