A common medium I use for simple mowing is to set the angle of the deck so the aft edge of the deck is slightly lower than the forward edge of the deck so that the forward deck angle allows the blades to first cut higher than the aft deck angle which helps eliminate some overall cutting pressure as you move through the field. The blades cutting at the rear deck will then cut at the operater's desired field height.
MY Brush Hog manual says the front should be 2-3" lower than the rear. If it's even the blades are cutting the grass twice (kinda of a mulching effect)
