Wow, pretty strong words. My TC29D is over two years old and onlly missed a start once because of the safety switch out of adjustment. Many others have the same tractor here and I don't remember reading other complaints.

Re: TC29D doesn\'t start every now and then

I have a similar problem on a new tz25da- my problem seems to involve the head light switch. While turning the key to start nothing happens until I move the head light swich just a little ( there seems to be a sweet spot ) the starter cranks and the engine starts. While the engine is running if I move the headlight switch to on the engine stalls.

Re: TC29D doesn\'t start every now and then

Scott is right on the money. The ignition switches in the TC29D's (and im sure some other boomers) are completely junk. I am a huge fan of New Holland, and I will be the first to say that my TC29D is one of the finest machines I have been lucky enough to own. However, the ignition switches that they put in them are a joke. I am very meticulous about my equipment and take good care of it. (Stored in polebarn, frequently serviced/lubricated etc.) After about 35 hours, I started experiencing the same problem you are. Sounded like the starter solenoid was hitting but not turning the starter. I cleaned the battery terminals, and made sure all other electrical connections were good. No difference. Finally, the key became hard to turn. So I took the ignition switch apart and the internal parts had fallen apart and busted. And when you see how the switch is made, you will know why. Tiny plastic and metal parts that break and bend easily, just a very poor design. So New Holland sent me a brand new ignition. I installed it. 6 weeks later, started doing it again. Took the ignition switch apart, and the same small metal contactors were bending out of place already. So here is your answer.... go to your local car parts store (I went to NAPA), and order an ignition switch. The one I got was only 15 bucks and its all metal construction, much more heavy duty. Brand doesnt matter, because whatever you buy, it will be MUCH better than what you have now. I installed it, and havent had a problem since. Its tricky because the symptoms make you think its your battery or starter solenoid. Chances are, its your ignition. Give it a look.
Good luck!!!

Re: TC29D doesn\'t start every now and then

Same problem here on my TC29D. Changed the switch, solenoid on the started, took the started apart and cleaned that too. Battery cables are cleaned. Still same problem. Maybe it's a relay to the starter? I haven't
checked that yet. I will check all the connetors to the safety switches. I hope someone knows what to do.

Thanks

Re: TC29D doesn\'t start every now and then

The ignition switch is a problem. My TC-29 does the same thing, except it's livable. The next position after the glowplug heating is start. Sometimes it's just dead but if I back off just a bit without going back to the glowplug position it will make contact. Failing that, I try it again and almost always make contact.
The battery terminal problem is quite different. Mine was a corroded ground connection at the battery. Acted like a dying battery the first few times when the weather wasn't too cold, but chose to fail completely when it was almost zero. Fixed it by cleaning the terminals and clamps. Not the battery at all.

Re: TC29D doesn\'t start every now and then

My TC33D's glow plug heater no longer seems to work. I suspect the ignition switch.

For those of you who replaced the switch with automotive switches, how did you handle the glow plug heater position? I'm considering a momentary push-button switch.

I guess my problem could also be the glow plug timer, any tips on how to diagnose it?

Re: TC29D doesn\'t start every now and then

I have a similar problem, I'm 99% sure it's the switch, because if I turn it "just so", it works no problem, if I just turn it all the way, no go. I'm planning on installing a "start" button, if the switch failed once, it'll do it again.

Re: TC29D doesn\'t start every now and then

I agree with Jinman here and he said be careful. Just a reminder to anyone electrically jumping a starter to make sure you're in neutral and brakes on. A good starting diesel can run you over fast! No problem for HST guys of course. Jim

Re: TC29D doesn\'t start every now and then

Today my TC-29 wont start. Again. Same problem 3 months ago so I bought a new battery and one of those resetting 10 amp fuses. Today the glow plug light came on and it sounded like the solenoid was trying to kick in but wouldnt start. Turned the key a second time and nothing. No dash lights whatsoever. Cleaned battery posts, hooked up jumpers, still nothing. Put in a 10 amp fuse in place of the resetting one. Still nothing. Rattled the key around and still nothing. I suppose the only thing left is the switch. My warranty ran out in November. How difficult is it to replace the switch? Has anyone tried a different route. Thanks for the help.

Re: TC29D doesn\'t start every now and then

Ok i pulled the switch. There is no power to any of the slots on the tractor in the female connector. Does this sound right? I put an ohm meter on the switch and certain combinations work. What do you guys think?
