TC29D rear PTO lever moves

They put my tractor’s PTO on a dynamometer and were able to duplicate the problem. They said the PTO lever moved back like I said it would do, but that it never slipped out. They said they loaded it down and about stalled the tractor without anything slipping or breaking. They said they let it run for about a half hour under load and the lever moved back to the point where I had it marked, but it didn’t go any farther. They still haven’t been able to explain why it moves past the detent, though. They said the PTO hp was 24.5, a little above the spec which is 23.6 for a hydrostat.

Well, they finally did something about the PTO. They adjusted the spring tension on the detent. It was adjustable from the outside of the gearbox, so they didn’t have to pull the cover off. They said the lever will move harder now when I put it in gear, but it should stay there now. They’re going to bring the tractor back later this week, so I haven’t tried it yet. Even when they do bring it back, it will be a while before I can actually try it under load since it’s been raining almost steady for days now. Once it dries off, I’ll hook up the mower and see how it acts. I asked them to copy the pages of the manual that shows what they adjusted and they said they would.

At least now I have them convinced that there really was something wrong and they said if it doesn’t act right to call them again and they will take care of it. This all started on 8/22/01, so it’s taken a long time to get resolved. I did verify with them that the “Extended Power Train Warranty” does cover the PTO, so when my regular 2 year warranty runs out at the end of April, I’ll have it covered for 1 more year.

I just got some more details on how they adjusted the spring tension on the detent. There is a nut on the housing right behind the lever that has a spring behind it. They said they put some shims in there to increase the tension of the spring. They said the lever will move harder now when I put it in gear, but it should stay in place now. They said they also put a spring on the lever linkage to take up the slack and reduce the vibration. I’m anxious to try it out, but I’ll have to wait for it to dry off around here.

Well, it hasn't exactly dried off around here, but the grass needed mowing anyway so I got it done yesterday. I ran the mower for about an hour and the PTO lever stayed put! So, this story finally has come to and end and it has a good ending!
