Had tree fall on steering wheel on my 33. Took top mechanism off, but couldn't get the wheel off. It is just a spline shaft, isn't it? I can't believe it would be threaded. Would a gear puller work perhaps? Don't want to cause more damage than I already have.

The steering wheel is just splined, not threaded. Did you remove the nut on the center shaft that holds the steering wheel on? If that is done, then a good overnight soaking in PB Blaster or other penetrating oil and a 3-jawed gear puller is what you need. The nice thing is that if your steering wheel is already messed up, some cosmetic damage on removal won't matter.

Thanks jinman. That's pretty much what I thought. Steering wheel was toast anyway. Will try a gear puller after I check a couple buddies.
