The redtop is for starting applications and the yellowtop is for deep cycle applications like a boat trolling motor. I bought my redtop at Sam's for less than $120. I'd sure check Sam's or Costco in your area if you have them and you are a member.

i went to samsclub.com and searched and couldnt find any automotive batteries. i am a member and do have one near me.

They have batteries in the Augusta store - not sure about Bangor.

I'm not sure when jinman got his battery (or if he modified his battery box) but Optima no longer makes the 51R, or so I'm told by my mechanic.

That's why I went with the Oddessy brand. Fit right in the existing available space. It worked flawlessly this winter although it doesn't get below 30º here very often. The tractor always fired up after the glow cycle. I think the 925L was less than $120 from the factory and it was delivered within the week.

I went thru the same "drill" when I looked for my battery. They don't list them on samsclub.com, but they have them in the tire and battery center at all stores I've ever been in. I haven't priced them lately, but when I bought mine, AutoZone had the same batter for $30 more. Unbelievable that there would be that much difference...

It was a yellow top gel battery valued at a whopping $140 on sale. Anyone know if this is the right kind or a good kind or way to expensive?

Mike

I bought a common, inexpensive "maintenance free" for ~40 bucks, and it fits perfectly. No more spewing acid, starts strongly during our bitterly cold Louisiana winters. ;)

I've found that high end batteries only last about a year or so longer than the cheap-O's, so I can't see spending 3X more.

im not sure that maintenance free would fix this problem because it seems to be around the post leaking or something which could happen with any wet battery.

Most maint free batterys are sealed or gell types and don't outgass to the extent that a reg battery does.. it's this outgassing that makes all that corrosion on t he posts and sourounding metals..

If you go with an AGM battery like Optima, or an Oddessy, you wont get any corrosion, period. No grease or Vaseline needed on the terminals or anywhere else. I took everything apart, cleaned it and repainted. After almost two years there's not even a hint of any corrosion anywhere.

There's a huge difference between a gel battery and an AGM battery.

No, Optima and Oddessy are AGM (absorbed glass mat) batteries. They are also sometimes called dry cell batteries. A gel battery is much more like a standard battery with electrolyte that has been gelled. Gel batteries have a few disadvantages - they must be charge slowly at a lower voltage than AGM batteries.

Don't take my word for any of this. It's not hard to find FAQs on the subject. Here's one. Not all the sections in this article apply to us, just skip past the parts you don't need.
