TC33D stalled, died

Have others seen this type of problem? In the 15 years I've owned diesel tractors, only once did I ever get anything in the filter bowl, and that was a little parrafin and what looked like a tiny bit of moisture. The 5 gallon plastic container I fill up at the station also has a fine brass mesh screen in it, but I've never seen anything much on that either. Are some fuel distributors or stations just sloppy with keeping junk out of their fuel? I'm to the point on my TC-40D of not changing the filter until I see at least some evidence of something in the bowl. Is this unwise?

From my experience, there is usually a film of brown algae on the filter pleats. I seems that the algae slows down the flow of fuel. Algae grows in all fuel tanks as far as I know. I do know that I always use fuel conditioner in the fuel that I buy to try to slow it down. I am sure that if some one knows more about it they will tell us.

Chris, I'm really glad you found your stalling problem and it was as easy as cleaning the filter bowl. Just last weekend, my girlfriend had a similar problem with her old International, and she found the bowl full of crud. As a matter of fact, her tractor will still not start and the injector pump and injectors may have to be removed and cleaned. I doubt that there is anything you have done wrong with your tractor. It might have had some foreign material in the fuel system before you ever got it (maybe from the factory) and this problem may show up again and again until all the system is cleared. At least now you will know the first thing to check./w3tcompact/icons/clever.gif I'm glad you're back operating...on both flat and hillsides./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

jerryg,

Diesel service would probably take care of that algea growth.
My understanding is that the algae grows due to a small amount of water that almost always exists in a tank. The diesel service and similar products kill the algae.
You can get this stuff at most car part stores or tractor supply.
