When my tractor was new I alway started at 1300+ rpm. I got lazy and started it at idle but in the winter the faster rpm definately helps starting. As far as PTO speed I agree that it is screaming but it is rated at 2800 rpm so 2500 for mowing seems reasonable. I just wear ear protectors. Hardly ever use it for dirt work at that rpm.
