TC35 no oil in front axle!

You will put hydraulic fluid in an axle that requires 80-90?
Your plugs are magnetic. I would run it with correct oil and check plugs for shavings. Hopefully you caught it in time before any serious bearing/gear wear.

So his TC35 specifies hydraulic oil in the front axle. And there isn't a single magnetic plug to be found on that machine. Where do you get your information?

JD 3038E uses hydraulic fluid in the front axle as well.

It's a common misconception that 80-90w is much heavier than hydraulic transmission oil.

It's really not.

Motor oil and hydraulic oil, are not measured on the same scale as gear oil.

The viscosity of different brands within a given weight, varies. Most hydraulic transmission oils are about the same viscosity as most 80-90w gear oils.

If you do side by side pour test, you can easily see it for yourself.

Both products are actually gear oil, that's why they are often interchangeable.

Hi all thanks for your comments and suggestions.

So I bought new Multi G fluid and started the process of draining the rear/main reservoir and replacing the filters.

Question, there are two drains, two filters but only one port to fill from in the back is that correct?

Its raining today so probably tomorrow Ill continue and fill the system up, move the used oil to the empty containers and then move to the front axle, draining/inspecting and then filling with the clean used oil and giving it a run then re draining and checking.

I was also in the process of getting new front tires mounted yesterday as they had arrived so while the oil was draining I gave the front axle/hubs a close look over and there is a leak, on the right hub on the inside. I cleaned it all up waited but saw nothing new leak out, so I will keep that clean and watch it, assuming after I refill it will leak again.

Question - is there a common cause to leaks on the front hubs?

Also, on the hub there appears to be a filler point, its a bolt that is at an angle on the hub housing, is there a separate area to add oil to them? My manual doesn't indicate it.

Thanks ~ Phil

Hi so the manual indicates it takes the multi G 134 fluid in the transaxle as well. So Ill check that the plug is magnetic had not thought of that. Ill put in used fluid and run it a bit and then drain and check plug for filings as well.

ANy thought of where it could be leaking from?

Everyone posting before me brought up great points and I have had everyone of the problems they described. So my suggestion would first make sure all of your lug nuts are tight, second check the grease fittings on the front drive shaft also make sure that u joint cover has a clamp around it, mine would make a super loud whining noise in high gear and I thought my front end was wearing out and it turned out to be I needed a clamp on the u joint cover. Third thing I would do is add just a little new fluid to the front diff to see if it was just low, FYI you can also check your fluid at the drain plugs on the reduction gear housing. Hope this helps.

That would most likely be a leak at your final reduction gear housing seal. I just did one on my ford 1620 same thing as what you have, not hard to do at all and you can get the seal and bearings from messicks. It's a common problem on the shibaura built ford/new Holland machines. You can add oil to the final reduction housing but I believe all you have to do is fill at the front diff plug and it will drain down into the reduction housing. I think that's there to act as a breather mostly when your draining the final reduction. A service manual would help you greatly in your situation if you don't already have one.

Hi I looked the diagram at Messicks and from where it was wet on the hub I do not think it is the final drive seal part#2 on this page: New Holland (TC35) - 3 CYL COMPACT TRACTOR (1/-12/3) Parts Diagrams

It was wet higher up and on the other side of the assembly, i.e. the inside above the hold that is on the top that parts go down into, I am thinking maybe its #12 seal that is leaking. Ill know better once I fill it and can see oil leaking out.

Thanks ~ Phil

OK so I changed the fluid in the main system and then I changed it in the front axle, luckly someone in another thread told me that the final drives are drained and filled separately which explained why 6 quarts overfilled the front axle. So I drained both and they both had some water in them and a horribly black color oil, don't think it had ever been changed.

I ran it around a bit and then drained and refilled them. Did not see any metal in the oil.

Test running it I still hear a clicking sound and it is more prominent when front bucket has a load of gravel in it so I suspect its a bearing or something. I cannot even tell what side it is so will need someone to walk along side to figure that out.

Any tests I can do to verify what is wrong without first taking it apart?

Thank You ~ Phil
