As suggested, move the tractor slowly in either direction. What most did not say is you will have better results by steering left or right rather than going straight. You are 'unloading' the drivetrain which binds up slightly due to miniscule differences in the front and rear drive ratios. A very common complaint, and an easy solution that should be better described in the manual.

Gary, if I just try forcing mine to shift out, I can flex the linkage, but to no avail. By doing as I and others have suggested here, it seems to come out relatively easy. Remember, motion with little or no load works best.
