TC40D doesn't want to start

Re: TC40D doesn\'t want to start

New Holland issued a service bulletin, I'll say about a year ago, concerning the failure of this 7.5A fuse for no reason. They stated that at a particular serial number, 8 amp breakers would be installed at the factory, and any units giving trouble in this area should be retrofitted. To my knowledge we haven't seen any tractors equipped with breakers unless our service dept installed them. We install the c/breakers in most all Class III's as we see them whether they "need" them or not.

Re: TC40D doesn\'t want to start

Yep, Rick hit it on the head. I had the same problem twice. After the fuse blew the second time, I called the dealer and asked about it. He sent me an 8 amp breaker per the service bulletin and it has happened since.

The first time I thought I had checked all the fuses but must've overlooked that one. So I laid under the tractor for an entire weekend w/ a multimeter checking all of the safety switches. I could've kicked myself when I finally found the fuse. The second time I knew exactly where to look.

Re: TC40D doesn\'t want to start

The fuse was the right place to look. However, once replaced it blew again. With the help of my brother and using the electrical schematic we traced all the wires and checked everything. The problem was in the solenoid. Took the starter/solendoid off and it did not want to work on the bench. After some "convincing" with a small object it started working again. Put it back on the tractor, replaced the fuse and it worked, for awhile.

Ran around doing some small errands and stopping and restarting, everything was just fine. Shut it off for a few hours and went to use it again and it blew the fuse again. Arrggghhh! So unless the brain trust here on TBN knows what might be wrong I plan on ordering a new starter Monday morning. Want to replace it while the weather is still above freezing, don't want to have to replace the starter during a snow storm.

Re: TC40D doesn\'t want to start

I don't believe there is a direct path from the offending fuse to the solenoid. As I recall, the fuse controls a couple relays and not much else, but I don't have a schematic here at home. Starters and solenoids are VERY reliable; I can't recall replacing any on anything as new as a TC. However, anything is possible. The price of a new starter will probably force you to troubleshoot with a VOM and amp meter anyway.........

Re: TC40D doesn\'t want to start

What led me to believe that the starter/solenoid is defective was the following situation:

Once the solenoid/safety switch wire was disconnected from the starter the fuse would no longer blow when the ignition switch was turned to the start position. It seemed to me that with this wire disconnected that the entire circuit was being tested for any shorts. When reconnected the fuse would blow. We also measured the resistance across the solenoid and it was only 1 ohm. This led me to believe that something within the solenoid was defective. Once removed from the tractor and voltage was applied to the solenoid it would not actuate, just hmmmmmm. After a few sharp raps it would actuate, but would later freeze again.

Any other thoughts?

Re: TC40D doesn\'t want to start

Dave, I checked my schematic and it shows an 8 amp CB supplying the starter solenoid through the Neutral Start Relay and the Range Neutral Start Switch. I believe you are correct that a defective solenoid could be the problem. I think you are on the right track.

Re: TC40D doesn\'t want to start

Dave, are you proposing to replace the entire starter or just the solenoid? I'm sure the starter is drawing way more than 7 or 8 amps, so my guess is your talking about only the solenoid. Hopefully the price for this is much less.
