I would take this one step further to say there is no need to change to the "winter" filter unless you have a problem with what you currently have before your change interval is up. To my knowledge, this is the first reported case of this happening on TBN and I think it's a rare problem based on the number of Hydro Boomers we have here.

It's possible that there was a run of filters that got into the supply chain with weak seals. That would account for several filters blowing out on the original poster until he got a "winterized" replacement. There is also the question of whether New Holland will take all the old filters off the shelf and put only the new filter out as a replacement. I know if I go to a dealer and buy a filter that blows out, I'm gonna be asking for a free replacement. I'd think New Holland would want to get rid of the lighter weight filters so they can save both their dealers and customers a hassle. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I assure you that since the change in the standard hydro filter to a physically smaller one a little over a year ago this is not a "rare problem". At the dealership I recently left, we had over a dozen filter failures last winter. Including several factory installed filters. The cold weather filter lists for around $60 so it is unpalatable to many customers as well as unpalatable to NH to adopt this filter as a factory install. As I have posted before in a number of related threads, this is one more manifestation of circuit-wide design deficiencies in the charge pressure/oil cooler system on NH compacts, sub compacts, and MC commercial mowers. Been going on in varying intensity for over 10 years.

Okay, so it is a systemic problem, but I am really only worried about mine.

Mine (NH 1925 Hydro) just blew out this morning (cold, probably around freezing) having run for about 6 months without problems (although we use it very little in the winter)

So what is my fix?

Put the seal on and crank it down tight?

New same style filter and crank it down tight (the new one had a piece of paper in the vacuum pack that said to watch installation instructions, I finally figured out they mean the diagram on the side of the filter that said hand tight plus 1.5 turns..... Now that is tight for an oil filter)

Run out and buy that $60 filter mentioned?

Start hunting for a blockage in my system? It seemed to be working fine

Thanks for the help folks, reading this board sure helps a lot more then the casual shrug I get from the dealer.

Alan, what hydraulic fluid are you using? You should try the Amsoil 5w-30 total hydraulic transmission synthetic fluid, along with the winter filter. Mucho $$$$, but who wants to have a failure at 15F, with the snow blowing, and the wind a whipping.......mmmmmmmmmm, mmmm! Cab tractor, heater, hydro with a front mounted snowblower, that's the way to go through winter.

I use Texaco TDH oil, but as we used up what I had on hand today, the balance was X-treme.

Fortunately, in Clarksville TN 15 degrees is something I usually read about and do not witness. I would move further south.

I ended up replacing the filter and topping off and everything seems ok.

1.5 turns past seated is real tight...

I think I will put the wrench on it again after it has got hot a couple of times.
