TC40D PTO shaft alignment trouble

Just hooked up the rear cutter to my TC40D for the first time. Aligning the pto shaft splines with my cutter's pto shaft was a real pain......The shaft doesn't rotate freely like my old tractor requiring me to rotate the shaft on the cutter to get the correct spline alignment......if you ever moved the pto shaft on a brush hog you know it's difficult to turn and when it does it also doesn't stop instantly where you need it to. I tried putting the tractor pto engagement lever in various positions(with the tractor engine stopped of course) to try to hit a point without pto engagement but before the pto brake stops the movement with no luck. Does anyone else have this problem??? ...... 3 minutes to hook up the 3 point and around 15 to get the pto shaft on ................TOM

I've seen this with several brands on this site. Easiest is to get an overriding pto clutch. Apparently, this is also easier on the pto brake, especially when powering down rotary cutters (less shock to the brake.)

I have also seen the suggestion to disconnect the shaft at the implement's gearbox, hook up at the tractor, and reattach at the implement gearbox.

Oh, and ALWAYS with the tractor shut down!

Does the TC40D have the hole in the pto shaft for the rollpin that holds the overrun clutch on ???? I have the slip clutch on my cutter so taking the shaft off at the gearbox will be a real PITA . My cutter uses the twist lock coupler and twisting the shaft and twisting the coupler at the same time and lining up the splines is a three handed job.............Tom

Yes.

I'm going to get the overun, too, just because it makes sense to me to take it easy on the PTO brake.

I think on a tractor this expensive NH should give us the overrun clutch free or design a better "brake" that won't "BREAK"..........Tom

The easiest way to hook up your cutter is to put a large screw driver through the u-joint and turn the cutter gearbox until the splines line up. I do this all the time and it takes me only a few seconds to hook up. Of course, it takes a little planning so you don't sit your cutter on something where the gearbox won't rotate. Any other way is just an exercise in frustration.

It would be tough for New Holland to put a brake on the PTO system as a safety feature but then give everyone an overide clutch. The brake is there for safety reasons. In other posts, that I have read here I found that PTO Brakes and Brushhogs don't go together very well. I beleive the overide clutch is only about $50.00 and would be well worth it for your Brushhog verses repairing your PTO system. Now I am not sure if the other guys have Brakes on their PTO's but I thought they did in the larger CUT's. My TC29D does not have one.

Ok, help me out here guys as I'm a new TC35 owner and I just hooked up my old rotary cutter yesterday, experiencing the same pita problems getting the pin lined up on the pto shaft.

I just sold my 8n (which I installed an ORC on) and that used to be a piece of cake... just establishing a baseline here...

Now, like a bozo /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif, after I finally did get the old rotary cutter hooked up to my new TC35, I jumped on board, pushed in the clutch (forgetting the new independent PTO) and quickly turned the PTO on... well, the darn thing turned that shaft so fast, it sheared the pin on the cutter...

Now, you are all talking about running out to get the ORCs....well, I'm not sure I'm there logically yet. Over the period of time that I did some bush hogging yesterday, I came to "realize" that the brake is a nice thing to have as a safety feature as long as you are turning it on and off slowly.

While the shaft on the PTO doesn't give to get the cutter shaft initally hooked up (an established pita /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif), I have SOME hope that this will smooth out over time by wearing a little bit... Am I wrong to anticipate that this will be the case? What I did notice about my ORC on my 8n... once I put it on, it was a real pita to take off, not that you will ever need to ... but in the winter when I'm just using the plow (and loader), I don't need to use the PTO ... I'd like to put the cover on it to prevent rust. Perhaps a little grease and some wear reduces this problem ....or am I dreaming?

I just received my over-running clutch that I ordered from Agri-Supply for my TC35D. Its a Eurocardin brand...I think. Seems decent quality for $ 40.00. Has a springed ( side pin ) lock on the tractor end. Now I just back up to the mower, spin the PTO / ORC ( clutch ) by hand and on goes the shaft.

I experimented with shutting down the PTO before and after the installation. At low RPM, you couldn't really see a big difference, but raise the RPM a bit ( increasing the spinning energy of the blades ) and the PTO at the tractor stops well before the shaft stops spinning. This was with a finish mower...I'm sure the brush-hog will be even more dramatic.

By the way....before the lectures start....I do always try to idle down before I disengage the PTO. I just wanted the extra insurance of having the ORC.

Do you have the part # of the eurocardin clutch you bought??? The quick attach feature you mentioned sounds better than the rollpin type I've found locally.........Thanks........TOM
