TC40DA
Hello everybody! I've been reading TBN for a few months now and feel very fortunate to have access to so much information from you all. I'm getting close to buying my first tractor. I've found a NH dealer I really like and am looking at a TC40DA. I think the pricing might be a little high, but if it's not too high I think the dealer might be worth paying for.

TC40DA, 4wd, Hydro trans w/16la loader less bucket - $23,450

Gearmore 72" Hyd box scraper w/hyd rippers, top & tilt, 3 spool valve - $3,450

Gearmore 72" 4 in 1 front loader bucket - $3,400

Gearmore 2000 lb clamp on forks - $440

Bison 7' rear blade to offset - $1,250

Tax $2320 for a total of $34,309

I anticipate moving dirt (landscaping projects), maintaining a 1/2 mile road and plowing snow in the winter, unloading lumber deliveries, skidding logs, and no doubt favors for friends and family.

Thanks in advance for suggestions and comments.

Matt, I think you are paying a premium price for your tractor and every implement with the exception of the bolt-on forks. The NH OEM remote valves can handle your boxblade fine, but you seem to be paying a big price for the complete Gearmore boxblade setup.

Having said that, I don't find that nearly as extravagant as the price for the 4-n-1 bucket. I can't imagine what you would expect to get out of a 4-n-1 bucket that would make it worth that much money. I'd check for a price on a WR Long bucket and I would not buy that rear blade until I was sure I needed it. I don't think you are being given any special deal on these because you are buying the complete package.

Essentially, I think you can not only do better, but I think you can do a lot better. I believe you will be able to save $3,000 or more if you keep looking. Remember, this is a tool that you should buy for what you will use at least 80% of the time. The other stuff can wait until you are sure you need it.

I didn't see a rotary cutter listed. Don't you have mowing tasks?

Also, be careful how heavy your bucket is. That loader's maximum weight at the height of a truck with lumber is about 1,800# at the pins. You might just need a heavier loader depending on how much lumber is on the stack. Those little piggy-back loaders on the backs of trucks are over three times as strong as the TC40DA. It's made to lift a bucket full of dirt and NOT a pallet of plywood or concrete. That's a specialty job for a specialty loader.

Good luck on your purchase. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

In re-reading this it sounds like a mini-rant. I don't mean to sound too severe, I just want you to be happy with what you buy and get good value for your money. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Jim,

Thanks so much for the reply. I knew you'd come through!

This is the first time I've ever shopped for a tractor. I didn't realized it had to be negotiated like a car. It sounds like I need to talk to the dealer and shop some other dealers. It would just be nice to be able to work with a dealer close to home (still 45 minutes away). But if he's $3,000 too high, I don't like him that much.

Regarding uses for the tractor. I don't need a mower. My property is in the forest where not enough sun gets to the ground to grow grasses. It's a good thing - I like it that way! As far as unloading lumber, I don't intend to unload whole units of lumber. I'm a (90%) cabinet maker and get smaller quantities of lumber.

I felt the attachments were overpriced also. I don't read much about Gearmore on TBN so I don't know how it compares to other brands. The box blade set up is supposedly very heavy duty. I have nothing to compare to on the 4 in 1 bucket, I don't know what they cost. The rear blade I planned on using to plow snow and to clean the ditches on my road (they are due) but it seems expensive too.

I'll expand my search of deaers in Northern California/Nevada, but am not sure of buying from further away. What do you think?

Again thanks for sharing your expertise,

Matt

Matt it would seem that all dealers don't look out for the customers best interests. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

When I was shopping for a new TC-40D less than a year ago one of the dealers was 4 grand higher than the dealer that I ended up purchasing my New Holland from. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif It was necessary in my case to make my deal with a shop that is an hour from my home but to save that much money the round trip was well justified.

Don't be afraid to shop around and don't be afraid to ask lots and lots of questions. There are more than a few reputable dealers out there, and you can save some money. Good luck on your purchase.

I'm right behind Jim saying you are paying a premium. Current dealer I am working with is looking to make $1000 over cost on a New Holland CUT - probably a TC45DA. I think this is a very fair premium. As you will read in this forum, pricing isn't the end of the story. Service/support is critical. Irrespective of your final view on the balance between price/support, having a rough understanding of cost is critical. Jim's previous posts on this subject might help a bit. The old D prices should give you a ballpark of the current DA prices.

Matt,
It looks like you're in my general neck of the woods and you're finding out what I found out about some NH dealers in California. Where in No. Cal. are you?

I suspect that you don't have too many NH dealers close by, so there's no competition to speak of. Buying from an out-of-state dealer can be a good choice in some situations - for example, like when your local guy is going to have to order the tractor anyway, and the local guy isn't competitive with the pricing. The only "what if" problem comes about regarding the warranty service - and that's a consideration only you will be able to take into account.

I ended up going all the way across the country to buy my tractor - and it was well worth it. I've only put a couple hundred hours on the machine so far, but it has been trouble-free and I haven't had to wrestle with the local shop's warranty service dept. Even if the rig does come down with a problem or two, I'm sure that the local shop will do the work without question - but I don't expect them to roll out the red carpet for me, and I don't really want them to anyway.

Check out some of the NH dealers that advertise on TBN, get an idea of what kinds of prices you can get, and have another conversation with your local guy. One way or another you're increasing your chances of getting a fair deal.

Matt, there are a few of us on TBN who are shopping dealers right now. This may be too far west for you, but the NH dealer in Santa Rosa has been helpful and competitive so far in my seach. Early on, I received a quote of $18.5 for a TC33DA with loader. I may not buy blue in the end, but if I do, Craig Weisner at what is now called Garton Tractor in SR (used to be Redwood Equipment until just recently) is who I am going to talk to.

FYI, Garton has a large harvest rental program, so if you don't mind a machine with low hours on it, you can save some money and still get a new warranty and financing.

If you end up pulling the trigger somewhere, please share the details and, most important of all, post pictures when the blue beauty arrives.

Mahlers, Thanks for the reply. I live in Georgetown a small town, located kind of between Placerville, Auburn, and Lake Tahoe.
I have recieved quotes from 2 dealers in North Carolina and am very impressed by the price difference (even after shipping estimates were talking 4000 to 5000 less than my local dealers quote. I'm still a little concerned about service and warrenty issues though. I just don't have the experience to know what kind of problems these tractors may have crop up and what I can handle without local dealer support. I will discuss this with my local dealer when I have some more quote to compare and give him a chance to get closer in price.

Riddler, Thanks for the reply. I will check with Craig at Garton tractor. My wife has cousins in Santa Rosa so a trip down there could be dual purpose. I'm lucky in that even though my closest dealer is 45 minutes away, if I expand my search out to the Bay Area and Nevada I have around a dozen dealers to look at. Looks like I have some work a head of me.

Thanks to all who encouraged me to keep checking quotes with other dealers. It has become clear that no California dealer can compete with a North Carolina dealer. However, after recieving close to a dozen quotes (5 could get the options right the first time, some never did get them right) I feel that I have three good competative quotes.

TC40DA, 16LA loader with quick attach, Gearmore heavy duty 4in1 72" bucket (built by ATI), quick attach pallet forks, 72" Gearmore heavy duty scraper box with hydrolic rippers and top and tilt (2G2-72), Gearmore 84" rear blade (GB70).

Quote is 30,800 + 2,233 (tax) = $33,033

Case DX40 with same options as above TC40DA

Quote is 31, 656 + 2,295 (tax) = $33,951 - dealer will try to get closer to above quote.

TC40DA harvest lease return with less than 150 hours and same options except a 84" Rhino rear blade, rear wheel weights, and a grill guard.

Quote is 27, 550 + 1,997 (tax) = $29,547

What do you guys think of a lease return?

The Case dealer was OUTSTANDING! He answered my questions fully and when he didn't know he found out for me.

What do you think of the Rhino blade? How does it compare with the Gearmore? Does anyone have any experience with either?

What do you guys think of the ATI 4in1 bucket?

Thanks for your help, I'm getting really close! Even my wife is warming up to the idea - she drove the case today. My 5 year old's favorite color is red.

Matt

PS if I buy a red tractor can I still post here or do I have to go to the lonely CASE forum? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

don't expect a lot from the 4in1. I have an ATI 4in1 and it works but not as well as i had hoped. I'm using it to clear trees and pick up the brush. The limit on tree trunks is about 6-7 inches. The trunk will slip out of the grippers. You are trying to lift it with a V shape. There is a small lip on the blade. With brush, limbs, the trunks need to all be layin parallel in order to pick them up. The learning curve is pretty steep.
