If you are talking about the TC45DA Hydrostatic transmission, you will gain almost nothing by buying the TC45DA over a TC40DA. The specs on those tractors are identical except for the PTO hp. Loader and hydraulic lift specs are identical. Don't waste your money on the TC45DA, get a TC40DA and you will have just as much power. I own a TC45D which I love, but I now know there was no reason to pay the premium for this tractor due to the HST transmission.

If you are considering buying a TC45A gear tractor, then there is a difference. My comments about the TC40DA only apply to the HST tractor.

As far as the Deere vs NH, I agree with everyone that you should try the tractors and buy the one that appeals most to you. They will both easily put a smile on your face.

First off, like everyone else has said, try them both and buy what you feel comfortable with.

That said I have owned a TC45da and will put it mildly that I did not like it. I did not like the supersteer, nor the loss in horsepower because of the hydro. I traded it up to a tc48da which is a bigger tractor.

I also own a 4720 deere and it is a cadillac. I love it. I do not like the rev up at start. I do not like the fill for the fuel tank but it is a much improved tractor over the 00 and 10 series john deere. Especially for a big guy.

I just ordered a new 4520 and am trading in my jd 4500 for it.

Try both for your sake but also try and get them to let you demo them in a work enviroment with an attatchment on them.

I thought the tc45da was a great tractor then I started hooking up implements and that is where I got into trouble. No horsepower or a big loss.

New Holland treated me very well in getting me out of the 45 and putting me in the 48. I have no complaints with them.

Good Luck!

I am not a diesel mechanic but I'm thinking the only difference between the 4120 and the 4720 besides several thousand dollars must be in the delivery of the fuel somehow if the engines are the same.

Any mechanics out there please add some input to this forum.

I am not a diesel machanic either and I have posed this question several times and have not got a good answer. It must be a pump adjustment.

I have posted this question (again - apparently) and asked if the increased HP was in the turbo. I have a Ford F-250 diesel truck and just put on a 4" exhaust. The power gain was VERY noticable. And if the diesel enhancements on a truck are the same for a tractor, it shoudl be an easy fix. The first two choices are larger exhaust and better air flow-through. Then there is the larger injector change-out and (if tractors have them) a different computer chip does wonders.

So why not buy the 4120 and then put on the 4720 turbo. Maybe change out injectors and a couple other items. For the $4,500 price difference, I bet you can get there cheaper with parts changed out.

I found this to be an interesting comment because the NH dealer I spoke to this past weekend said the same thing. When I was talking about running a 6' light duty cutter he said the 40 would handle it fine. When I asked about the HP difference with the 45 he told me the only people that buy it are ones that have to better their neighbors or to keep up with them. I'm sure there are some legitament reasons but seems like most people don't really need it.

More power to the PTO is a reason for buying the TC45DA over the TC40DA, but not pulling power at the wheels. The difference in cost is not justified by the gains on a hydrostatic tractor. However, on a gear tractor you could make the argument that the extra cost is justified. Again, you have to decide that...and always make sure you outdo the neighbors.;)
