A little update....

I didn't have time to tear into the tractor so my father-in-law brought the tractor to a local repair shop. They checked the relief valve and pump, both were fine. Turned out to be a problem in the joystick. There was a loose allen head bolt or stud that had backed out. I haven't talked to him yet to get the entire story, but I guess it was something simple.

That allen head bolt is a power beyond plug that has to be installed. It's a common problem, but normally it only makes the 3PH quit working. You said your FIL's complete hydraulic system failed including the loader so I didn't suggest that as the problem. This is the first time I've heard of that having any effect on loader operation.
