Re: \"Teacher\" splain this

Sickening. I can see why more and more parents are choosing to home school their children.

Re: \"Teacher\" splain this

Franz,
Unfortunately the NEA is a powerful union. My wife happens to be a member. She is a special ed teacher certified in PA, NJ and NH. If you want to teach in those states you probably need to be a union member.

My wife is as right wing as they come (Cancels out my left leaning tendencies). She loathes the political positions of the NEA. But she needs to work so she pays her dues.

So just like in any union, don't paint the rank and file with such a broad brush.

Re: \"Teacher\" splain this

I read that yesterday and freaked ... and then calmed down. After all, it's no different than the NEA has been acting in the past 20 years. I'm sure, as with any union, the rank-and-file have no say in policy - but it sure shows the extreme leftist bent of the gang at the top. IMHO, not much difference between them and the gang at the top of the Chinese Communist Party ("we know what's best for everyone").
We can only hope that parents can still influence the youngsters ... or that the rank-and-file teachers ignore this crap (which appears to be the case based on reports I saw today).
My vote would be for a charge of Treason for each and evry member of the NEA executive.

Re:

Having to work for administrators who embodied this type of thinking, and having to pay "representation fees" (really dues with a few pennies refunded each month to account for what the NEA describes as political activities) are two significant reasons I am no longer teaching.

Jim

With apologies to the many teachers who rise above this sort of thing and carry on in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds - to look into a typical american classroom is to see, in all its miserable detail, the genesis of many of society's woes.

Re: \"Teacher\" splain this

Franz your statement on firing and banishing the teachers in the NEA is as ignorant and thoughtless as the NEA lesson plans. Phil and Peter are much nearer the point. I know many NEA members that try to change leadership with little or no success. Rather than quit they have chosen to fight for what is right from within. Most of the public school teachers (that I know) will not spread the anti western and american propaganda of the lesson plans and are ashamed to be associated with a group that promotes them.
Your outrage that a group that represents educators would propose such an activity is totally understandable, but put away the shotgun and get out the rifle (not literally) and focus on the leadership that made the statement.
If everyone that has been represented by poor leadership were banned from the country, there wouldn't be anyone left.

Re: \"Teacher\" splain this

Ranchman,

Thanks for the sites. I read some of the lesson plans. They looked somewhat light-weight to me, but I often have that response to high school lesson plans. Perhaps I didn't find the really offensive ones?

Re:

Harv,

I agree that the Times is sure not the Post, but it seems that in this instance the information is at least accurate. Having gone through the years with kids in school being taught by people who have never left the safe, secure womb of academia I have to admit that the story didn't particularly surprise me. Disgust, bother, offend, irritate, yes... but not surprise.

I think that you have to do one heck of a lot of "home schooling" after your kids get home from school just to get the other point of view out there for your children. I never wanted my kids to be little clones of their father (and I know their Mom prayed that would never happen) but I did want them to have the opportunity to see both sides of an issue and then be allowed to make up their own minds as to which they thought was right. I would always take the opposing view just to make them defend their positions.

My experiience was that the schools didn't appear to want that. They seemed far more interested in promoting an agenda.
