It is interesting what you learn when you pull the manual out. Yep I ran across the page that said I had a Tele-Scopic and Tilting Steering Wheel. Gee I always thought it looked like it Tele-Scope but I could never get the top loose to do it. So tonight I put one of them pipe wrenches on the wheel and yep it went to the left some, but then couldn't get it back locked. So I investigated some more and sprayed a bunch of WD40 down inside of the center, left it set for an hour and I now do have a Tele-Scopic wheel.

I wonder how many years I would have went??

WOW !! I am shocked that the center nut was ever cranked that tight. Mine has always and only ever taken a slight turn and the telesopic shaft moves quite nicely.
Glad you discovered yours, kinda like getting a new tractor. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have no such luck - at least with the telescopic function. Mine is locked tight and has never moved. But... my tilt cylinder has never failed and works great. I filled that little spring hole with WD40 - ever since I did that it has always worked without sticking. If you release the tilt lever too fast it pops WD40 towards your face. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I just need to get around to fixing the telescopic steering. NH says they get stuck from sitting outside - they deal with this issue all the time.

DC,

Just pop out the middle cover and then set your wheel straight up and spray some WD40 and let it soak for a while. Then remove the larger plastic knob by removing the center post bolt and then spray some WD40 on it and let it set for a while. I did also remove the large nut so the WD40 could get to the center post. The center post has a flat spot on it so you can work it with the plastic knob back and forth.

Murph,

So you are telling me that I do not have to completely disasseble the plastic beneath the steering wheel?

I will try what you say right now.

Bigger issue - just went out to try to fix the telescopic function. Got one heck of a squirt in the eye - and it's not wd40. By pure coincidence - my tilt is now bleeding down too. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Time to read past posts.

How much is this going to cost me??????

Cliff, maybe my TC-40D is a little different, but I doubt it. Mine was beginning to stick a little, so I popped off (actually dug out) the center rubber cap of the steering wheel and then removed the small NUT that holds the locking mechanism handwheel in place and removed the handwheel. With that off, you should see some anti-seeze silver greese around where you need to lube. Seems to me there's no need to remove anything more. I just sprayed WD-40, let it set a while, and then put the handwheel back on temporarily and turned it back and forth. To finish up, I shot some 10W30 oil on it and did the same. The point to lub is between the 5/8" or so inner diameter shaft and the outer shaft that the big nut is on. You'll be able to see clearly why if you wash your tractor frequently or leave it out in the rain, there's problems. The steering wheel housing holds water in up to a 1/4' or so in depth around the mechanism. Unless you severly tip your wheel, the only way for the water to be removed is by slowly drying up. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
