Telephones... then and now

When I host exchange students they keep in touch back to Germany and Austria via Skype... it is extremely popular and basically unlimited...

Who needs a phone?

Native VOIP apps are great, so long as you can schedule your meeting times somehow. Used to spend hours on Skype chatting with a buddy out West. I tend to use Google Voice these days - great for outbound calls, can't beat free to landlines/cells.

The main gotcha up here is it is not easy to set up inbound voicemail on Voice. If I lived in the USA (or wasn't as lazy ) I'd just use Voice as my primary number, including for inbound voice. More people seem to prefer digital text communication these daze, but I still want people to be able to leave me voicemail in critical situations.

I don't know about the rest of the world, but Canada/USA has enough public wifi access that you could reasonably ditch the cell phone here. Only gotcha is long drives in the middle of nowhere.

Lots of tech available today...... many people's communication skills seem to be declining in inverse proportion to the tech growing..... but that subject is probably worthy of a thread of its own.....

Rgds, D.

As a side note... I have sent in Wikipedia corrections that were incorporated... with your knowledge it would be a service if you could update that page.

I have given up trying to correct Wikipedia. Fan boys just come along and re-write history.

The Hospital phones have been on the fritz... intermittent... no area code calls completed and 3 open service tickets with ATT

Everything was installed new in 1995 with what was then called a Hi Cap service that ATT now refers to as a legacy T1 Centrix...

Spent most of the day with ATT calling from a rotary phone I plugged into a fax line... at least the faxs machines never missed a beat.

I told the ATT folks every time there is a problem... the T1 card has RED or AMBER LED lamps illuminated instead of just the 3 GREEN LED lamps.

In desperation I swapped a T1 line card from a circuit no longer used and phones have been perfect since...

Problem started the day before Christmas...

Anyone remember a time when a trouble ticket from a Hospital would have a tech onsite immediately?

ATT said Monday is the next available...

With the system working should I just keep quiet about switching the card?

So it was installed 22 years ago and you still expect them to repair it? I think it may be time to spend some cash on a new system

YES! Mom's the word. Count your blessings.

I approached the Telco about moving cabling out by the road as a marker is in my way. They have to get engineering involved and the municipality. I flagged down a service vehicle and asked the friendly guy for his opinion. He said, just do it yourself, if you have the resources and no one will be the wiser.

I am beginning to think that "legacy" really means, good, solid and reliable.

Our phone guy has just gone through his 5th ATT sales rep in a month. Service cannot talk to sales, but only sales can authorize service.... its all falling apart!!!!

Negative. Swap the suspect card back in and enable it and observe operation. I assume the card was in the pbx.. If you know the part number of the card, you might tell me. Another problem could be the "package" on the wall the T1 is delivered by. This is the telco's and you may have reset it by swapping the card in the PBX. Don't try to fool the tech, explain all of your actions and observations. This will help tremendously in troubleshooting. Remember the goal is to get good solid service back to the hospital. NOT to play games and obfuscate. Come clean. You don't want this to be some ongoing intermittent issue. The tech job is hard enough with someone not telling him all the known facts. He is there to help you. Help him.

Yes, the "high cap circuit" down for a hospital should have been an immediate dispatch... Would have been in my organisation.

ATT has so far not dispatched anyone... since the day before Christmas... I have at least 9 hours on the phone and email with our business account rep in the loop...

What ATT has done is repeatedly tested the circuit and then sent a recorded message to the Hospital Main Number saying "Clear on Test".

Years ago I was told to pull the card, wait and put it back... may 2005?

It did not work so a specialist was sent out immediately at 11pm at night... he swapped the card for a new one and all was good... until December 22.

I tried the reset this morning and within 5 minutes all the problems were back...

So far exchanging the card 3 hours ago and all phones are good... no idea how it will be in the morning... but at least I could go home knowing the phones were working in case the nurses needed to call out... also advised they keep cell phone handy.

It looks like this... at one time we had a dozen NIU and now only two are active in the building...

ATT told me today they just don't have people available for this older technology...

k0ua...

This link about sums up my experience to the letter...

The Systems Engineer >> Blog Archive >> Telco – Clear to the smart jack!

Man, that brings back a log of bad old memories. Memories of me representing an equipment vendor, fighting the local telco (Southwestern Bell) to prove to them that the equipment they provided was defective. I am beginning to believe there are not a whole lot of us old dogs left that actually know how to troubleshoot using the scientific method.

Yes, I have heard "trouble is good leaving here" a lot of times. I could tell stories, but this is not the place or time...
