Oil & Fuel Tell diesel and gas apart ?

/ Tell diesel and gas apart ? #41
Diesel is greasy. Main difference. One idiot in the army ordered the truck brake drums to be cleaned with diesel fuel (he WAS and idiot) and the trucks did not brake afterwords:D :D

We ended up running those trucks in circles with emergency brakes on to burn the diesel off and it worked eventually:)

You could clean those drums with gasoline instead, but this was easier.

Ok write this down...we all know what pee looks like

diesel looks like pee, like when you've been working on a hot day.
Gas looks like pee, but like when you have to go real bad and you held it for a while. :)
If the stuff in one of the cans is red, then you deserve a sucker punch.
If YOUR pee is red, then go see a doctor and I'm sorry for the sucker punch!

:)

You may have been dismayed a bit.. but IMHO.. that was the best result.. IE.. since no one new the answer.. no one posted. I think that would be better than 10 different 'guess' answers that took you in 10 different directions...

:) Ha! I always look at that, probably because the first two threads I started went forever with no posts. I actually did the research and wound up posting the answers to both of my questions. It's funny now but that was my very first experience here on TBN. I didn't know if people didn't like me, didn't care, or if I was just that boring. Turns out, no one knew the answers.

I am reminded of a good friend of mine growing up who tasted EVERYTHING. He ended up as a bulk fuel officer in Vietnam and was the only person I ever knew who could tell all fuels apart by taste -- including JP-4 from JP-5 from commercial Jet A.

Put a sample in the blender and turn it on for a few seconds. Then see how long it takes for the foam to die down. Diesel foams a lot more than gasoline.

P.S. Don't tell the wife about the funny smell in the kitchen after you do this. :)

If u want a new kitchen this will work, when the blender ignites the gasoline on the electric motor and explodes! Remember we are dealing with a flammable liquid, use extreme caution.

Aside from the fact that I thought my reply was transparently facetious, I don't know that a little gas in the cup of a blender for a few seconds will generate enough fumes to be ignited by a spark from the semi-enclosed motor. If anyone cares to actually try this way to tell them apart and is concerned about ignition of the fumes, I suggest either putting the lid on the blender (as I envisioned) or using an Amish style hand powered eggbeater instead. The foaming results will be the same with lessened chance for ignition, unless the eggbeater throws a spark.

Put sample of each into it's own clear sealable bottle, label A for one, and label B for the other. Leave out in the open near a parkbench somewhere. Someone will notice, report to the department of homeland defense, news crews, bomb squads, etc. will be called to site. They will be collected and sent to a lab to be tested. Then just watch the news for the results. "It has been determined that suspicious bottles of liquid turned out to be gas in bottle A, diesel in bottle B", courtesy of your local news announcer and your federal gov't. Problem solved.:D

The nice thing about this is when you get them mixed up all you need to do is paint the red jug yellow and the yellow jug red.

Yeah, in retrospect I think you are right. It's better not to get posts than to get someone guessing wrong or 47 people saying "Dunno what it is, but that's a nice shade of blue." If that happened to me now I wouldn't worry too much about it, but those were my first two posts of any kind on any forum so I had no idea what was going on back then.
