With the Lincoln, you put the hose on the zerk, pull and hold the trigger and either count the clicks or watch for grease . Each click represents grease being pumped. I can't imagine why a variable trigger would be needed. Perhaps someone with one could explain. I can grease all the zerks on my tractors without running out of battery power. I've never counted how many zerks. You aren't going to blow off a boot with one of the Lincolns.

I blew one of the boots off my trucks upper balljoint with a pistol grip hand pump grease gun. I guess it was cold and I squeezed too much too fast and hard and the boot went pop and came unglued or what ever; it separted from the metal. If I would have eased the grease into it like I should have it probably would have lasted a few more years.

I have never seen or operated the cordless guns to know what they are like. Did not know if there were differences in operation. My gut feeling is a variable trigger would be better so you could ease the grease into a joint when cold or if you knew it was near full. If you did not care you could always just trigger down for full power from the get go.

I have had the Lincoln 12v and one battery for three years. I can Grease my FEL and BH (about 40 zerks) twice on a charge. It goes Weeeze Weeeze Weeeze (that's three automatic pumps) and I love mine.

Hmm, must be something wrong with my cordless guns. They go Weeeer, Weeeer, Weeeer not Weeeze, Weeeze, Weeeze. :D

I bought my Dad a 12 volt Lincoln some years ago. He uses it on the farm constantly. (Loves it) He figures about 3 electrically pumps to equal one mechanical pump/stroke of the old handheld style grease guns(volume wise). He noticed this immediately after he first starting using it. This is why I believe the new Lincoln 14 volt has two settings: 1 setting for equal volume of grease compared to the old handheld styles, 2nd setting for less volume BUT more pressure to push thru moderately stubborn zerks. The 12 volt Lincoln that my Dad uses still doesn't push thru a really plugged zerk(neither does the handheld). Those times you just remove/replace zerk and clean out the hole as deeply as you can with seal pick or tiny screwdriver blade then try again and it usual works.
The great thing about electric grease guns with a 30" whip hose is that one hand to hold gun/trigger and other hand to hold hose end connector on correctly to the zerk. This sure bets trying to prop the grease gun barrel on your leg, chest or stomach and pump the lever with one hand while the other hand holds the hose at the proper angle.

Ok
I used it today
Worked hard the last 2 days, moving 260 yards of compost and ripping and tilling 2.5 acres, ended up with about 17 hours on the tractor (yeah, in two days, i told you I worked hard) and I realize that's mroe than my 10 hours, but I couldn't get to it.

so, anyway, got to use the grease gun.
It does make a weird noise.
BUT
man does it put out grease, with no hand work. Having the big long cable and hold it with one hand and trigger it with the other.
Pretty slick.
I like it.
