No backfill..everything is right from here, nothing trucked in. The only spraying I have ever done is weeds around the house, and I have not dumped any seed here yet.
I have got to look at the soil results but I can't remember the Ph given, the tests were done last fall. I did take the results to the local farm supply store and they suggested 10-10-10.
No the straw I put down is not for seed contact but for bird protection AND errosion control. Since the ground is really hard packed in many places even if I got 1-2 inches of broken up soil when we get a hard rain if I have no straw everything just washes away, soil, seed everything. The straw also helps keep moisture in as long as possible, a light rain even morning dew is used to it's fullest I have seen on straw vs. strawless areas. Places covered with straw does not seem to crack and dry out while the other spots will be cracked like the mojavie desert after 2-3 days of no rain.
One section of road frontage seems to be doing better now, 90% germination but little growth which is not surprising due to the lack of rain this past week.
The other section of road frontage is having a hard time. I believe that when the noreaster blew through and tossed the straw all over the place THEN we got some rain it crusted everything over and now the seed can't break through since the dirt has not been moist in over a week. Dunno...
I may plant something near the home, right now all we have is dirt. It will probably be a thin planting but something to keep the soil together. I am seriously considering calling someone in to do hydroseeding in the spring. Over the winter I hope to build a 250gal storage tank that I can hitch on the tractor and put some PVC with a few valves and spray heads on it. It should help during the first few weeks of seeding in the future.
