How does the PTO engagement on these tractors work? It looks like a mechanical lever to me, but the salesman said it was like an electric switch that just went on/off and that I'd have to reduce the engine speed before engaging it so I didn't shock the mower too much.

Also, does it have a PTO brake? The salesman said it didn't... but I just want to make sure as I have trust issues when it comes to salesmen /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The Class III machines have a hydraulic PTO brake.

It's best to keep the RPMs low when engaging the PTO then gradually ramp the RPMs back up to operating speed.

To disengage the PTO gradually lower the RPMs then feather the PTO to the off position rather than a sudden stop and your PTO brake will have far less shock. This is especially important if you are using an implement such as a rotary cutter without an over-running clutch.

New Holland has a designation system for different sizes of compact tractors sharing the same frame size. The TC35/40/45 constitute what NH calls Class III because they are all the same size except for the engine.

Your sales person has no idea what he is talking about get a different one fast! There is no telling what other wrong info he will give you. The guy was wrong about both questions. The PTO engages manually and DOES have a brake!
