Looks like John Deere green. Has 4 plows with disc's in front of them. I'm not a farmer as you can tell. My wifes Aunt has some attachments to get rid of after her husband died and I'm trying to find out what I can about it.

Close up of the actual plow. I couldn't find any kind of model number on it, but didn't know where to look.

Appears to be a semi-mounted plow. Beyond that, not enough to look at to tell. May be able to associate it with one of the tractors that are (or were) on the place. If it's Deere, there will be some part numbers, I believe, that indicate as such.

From what I can see in the foto's....looks like a bottom plow with sod wings...the discs in front of the sweeps are probably colters...they came smooth or fluted...they cut a line in the sod for the moldboards and sweeps to follow, ease pulling...

I agree with the sod mole boards. Can't see enough in the pictures to tell much more.

It is a J.D. semi-mount plow. I have one just like it...will have to run out to the field tonight when I get home from my "real" job to get the model #.

The piece above the moldboard was called a cover board. It made sure that the top layer of soil material being cut by the coulter and turned by the moldboard got completely under as the plow moved forward. The cover boards wear more quicly than the moldboard.

Some coulters were serrated for more effective cut of corn stalks, again allowing better cover.

The real wear part is the plow points, bolted to the bottom of the moldboard. Older plows had plowshares at the bottom which were generally heavier and more costly than the points. We always took shares to a shop for a new welded nose whereas the lighter/cheaper points were just replaced.

Several types of tripping mechanisms were used to protect the plow when it struck large rocks, etc. A hydraulic rig was used as well as spring loaded devices. Both allowed the whole bottom to kick back. These were a far cry from old pull type plows that were attached to the drawbar via a clevis. When you hit a rock, the whole plow stopped and jumped off the clevis, also breaking the trip rope (for mechanical raising/lowering) away from the tractor.

Re-looked at the photos. Paint color, although faded, suggests you might be looking at an Oliver, not JD. The Oliver paint was somewhat bluish compared the brighter JD green....

It's a JD model #145. They made a zillion of them. I've owned 3.

The 'disks' are coulters to cut the trash on the surface mostly, tho they do help slice the ground too. They came smooth, ripple, slotted, or cone. Cone is cool, break down more with more $$$ holders but throw the trash to the side so it doesn't plug as bad. Whatever type you have, they are probably wore out as they need to be LARGE and if you are replacing them might as well get rippled, generally a bit better in most conditions. Whatever you get, get as large as possible.....

The bent wings are cover boards, they help to get taller growning stuff turned under & burried as you plow. They are rather rare in my location.

They came with 14 or 16" bottoms (measure between frame members to see what yours is, straight across) and there was a 'HD' version designed to plow a little deeper. Probably many other silght variations too. The frogs (part the shiny pieces bolts to) is slightly different for these variations.

They probably came out in the 60s, wonder if they sold into the 70s? Was a very popular machine in it's day, you can get any part you want for it from JD, but in my neck of the woods 3 bottom models sell for $500, while 4-6 bottom models sell for $100 scrap, so just buy a couple & have all the parts you need.

Shoup (an ag parts supplier) is online & have all the shiney high-wear parts for less than a dealer.

That picture shows 3 bottoms, the one I have has 4. Does that make a difference in the model number? I also couldn't tell if it has hydraulics, I would think they would have to otherwise how would you lift the plows for transport.

If you are planning on using them you better have something beside's a compact tractor to pull them with.

They are a semi-mounted plow, means they use the cat 2 three-point lower arms of the tractor (does not connect to the top link!) and a hydraulic cylinder raises & lowers the rear wheel.

They came in 3-6 bottoms as I mentioned before, all are 145 model. They were not built heavy enough for that 6 bottom version, lots of broken rear linkage shafts & lower hitch. Worked real well in 3 & 4 bottom.

Rambler,

Based on the prices you stated, if a person needed a 3 bottom, why would they not buy a scrap 4 bottom for much less money and just remove the rear plow?

Sure it would look funny, but sure would save some $$$$.........

And yes, I'd like to see someone hook a CUT to one of these--now that would be funny.

Back in the 70s, I worked for a farmer that made some $$ in the off season. He'd buy IH M's and Super M's here for next to nothing. Fix them up a little and have them painted. Then we'd haul one or two to Iowa, where they brought top $. We'd back haul with semi mount JD plows, which were not well received in Iowa, but were impossible to find in KS. Made a lot of $$$ for him doing that.

The 3 bottom plows hook up well to restored JD tractors, which has become a very popular hobby around here. Folks restor the 50 hp JDs, and then have nothing to do with them, so they have plowing parties, go plow 20 acres of oats or wheat stubble for folks, get 5-15 tractors in & have some fun.

Of course, if your tractor looks good, it needs a matching & good looking plow or you would be too ashamed to join the party....

So yes, you can move the rear wheel up & do as you say, but that isn't the demand 'here'. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I got lucky, went to an auction & bought a 3 bottom 16" in good shape for $120. Two weeks earlier I saw the same plows in the same shape sell for $525 & $600. Figure I can use it a couple of years & make my money back. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif I have a 145H 4 bottom 16" that I could make working again fairly easy, and I have a 14" 145 that has a lot of parts stripped off.... The 'new' 3 bottom has the flat shank coulters, the 145H has round shank coulters, and the parts unit had cone coulters, tho dad in his wisdom took them apart & pieces are all over.... Grrr. See if I can hunt enough together to put 3 good cones on the 3bottom, that would help with trash.
