Tell your new employer about a job interview or not?

Double post. But, couple thing that where touched on earlier

Benifits are gold: well, I disagree somewhat, try mailing your blue cross card to the mortgage company. Benifits are the icing on top, but when starving, I'd prefer more cake!

I think we all grapple with when to leave a "secure" job, but who really truly has a 'secure' job?
For instance, the contract I'm working on got transferred to another engineering company, despite good rating from us. Now, I've got till roughly June 16 on this and my company is hoping to train me in another job. Now, this new job is something I've never done before, is a step up, but we haven't talked cold hard cash yet (figure I have to prove my self first), I'm not sure I'll like it (I'm 80% field, 20% office now; new gig would be at least 80% office), I probably will loose the work truck, which is a Huge factor to me, living 75 miles from the office. But, I like this company, and I frankly, fear change.

To take a different job to "step-up" and further ones career is a different story than basically interviewing for the same job just with another company

He was at the old job for years with no bennies, the new job has bennies. Assuming similar pay I would call that a step up.

A friend interviewed and got a job near his ex-hometown in a different state. More pay probably and comparative benefits. He didn't mention this to anyone but he just took two weeks vacation at our company.

At the end of the two weeks he came back to our company and stayed. No harm no foul. I think that was a good idea just in case the new place wasn't all it was cracked up to be and it wasn't in this case...

Never tell your current employer you are looking and make sure you have everything locked in and possibly start working before anything is mentioned to the old employer. They will get over it.

My wife went against my suggestion to just give a couple days notice with her office job. She always heard to give two weeks at least, and she was shocked when they walked her out the door.

30 years ago as a boss of around 15 employees, I was offered a job starting in three months. I told the owners and then they proceeded to cut me out of all decisions and treat me like dirt for the three months. Never again would I do that.

OP here: My feelings are that the right thing to do is give your current employer a reasonable notice, so they have the time to scout for a replacement for you...exactly what good does it do an employer to show you the door when you give them notice you are leaving? Perhaps it is a knee-jerk reaction in the hopes you will not have stolen company secrets or the customer base...yet that in no way makes it right.

Tell you something...the further this thread goes on, the more grateful I am to have worked the majority of my career in an era when most employers treated you right. How many of you agree with me on that?

If you put in two weeks notice that you are leaving, many, many companies will show you the door that day. The reasons? Many, including:
- You're a high level salesperson leaving for another sales position in a competitive market.
- Fear of damaging equipment/computer files.
- Sending damaging emails to employers/competitors.
- Knowledge of and/or access to proprietary systems/trade secrets.
- And don't forget, maybe you're a lousy, bitter, employee. ;)

As for giving a current employer notice that you have a job interview with a different company, that depends on the situation, but for the most part, its almost a guarantee of a career killing advancement dead-end at your current job. The only exceptions are for very young folks in intern-type positions, student employees that are working towards a degree in an unrelated field and things like that.

For example:

I had a co-worker of 20 years that kept telling management that he was looking for other work at jobs that he liked better and that he really didn't like his current job. So they figured "why should we advance this guy, spend money on training him on new systems, etc... if he's planning on leaving?" He eventually left and was actually bitter that they didn't advance him or train him as much as they did his co-workers.

On the other hand, back when we had money and an education benefit, we'd hire part-time college students and pay them for 6 college credit hours per semester REGARDLESS OF FIELD OF STUDY! They'd come work for us part-time, take 8 years to go though college, get out with a degree PAID IN FULL! And then we expected them to look for employment with another company, tell us about job interviews, provide references, and wish them well! Man, those were the days!

So what happened this is from December?

I would have tried to reschedule interview. Most likely no facts will come from the meeting with the new boss, and you will be able to read about any changes. But there can be a value in watching his face as he tells you he is or is not screwing you.

I see the harm from making new company thinking you are not interested, but I also see the harm from telling your employer that.

As said benefits are very important. But he has been at this place for 7 years for a reason, it is all their is, he likes its, or it is not that bad.

I would have tried bumping up the interview, or even splitting the day.

You will have job interviews that go nowhere. But you should not slight your employer until you have another job for sure.
