Looking at installing water temp and oil pressure guages. Looked at old posts here and the yahoo site. One questions still lingers - for the temp sender - can I install a metric adapter and then a "T" for my guage sender and one for my dummy light? Or does the sender have to be in the block - in contact with coolant? OR should I just go with a guage--forget the dummy light sender?
Also - does anyone know what adapter sizes I'll need? All old posts seem to talk to the YM1700.
thanks for the input!

I believe rogerscotty did a 'T' and has both an idiot light and gauge, etc.

I am reasonably sure the threads are the same on most Yanmar temperature sensors (16mmx1.5mm). The diameter will be 15.8 to 15.9mm if it is in fact a 16mm sensor.

As far as a T fitting goes, most temperature sensors and gauge kits will come with instructions advising not to put a T fitting in the line. The sensor needs to be as close to the water stream as possible to obtain an accurate reading.

Don't know how much you are willing to put into this "project", but they do make sensors that have 2 connections in one package - 1 for the gauge and 1 for an idiot light. They are not cheap and require the use of a resistive temperature gauge. Check out www.egauges.com.

Hope this helps.

As a matter of fact, it may have been an oil pressure gauge that was 't' 'd.. would make more sense.

Yes I think a "T" on the oil pressure side is common. I guess since the water temp dummy light doesn't come on 'til the engine is over heating, just a guage would suffice. And it's my temp sender that is in need of replacement at this time. Maybe I'll use the temp dummy light as a "work light ON" indicator....
thanks for the tips fellas!

Senders......Shucks....that reminds me that I've still got some old senders kicking around in my car and need to return them to one of our group....but the address and info is all on my old and broken laptop computer. If you read this, please let me know where to send 'em. Otherwise I guess we wait till Toshiba sends that laptop back.

I changed mine and decided to convert to guage only and abandon the lights. It was simpler that way. After an exhaustive search for the write thread fittings from the block, brit. pipe thread, metric, NPT, straight, etc .... I got gutsy and took a 1/4 NPT tap and chased the threads in the block. Then I installed a NPT nipple and plumbed to the new guages water and oil. I think the water tap is bigger but the closest size NPT tap worked well and I haven't had any prob's
