Howdy,

Looking at picking up a temp shelter to be used as a garage for my 4 wheeler, hay, etc now that the Kubota has taken over a bit of space in the barn. Plan to add an awning/overhang off of the side of the barn when time allows.

Saw a few on Tractor Supply's website, but wasn't sure if there might be anywhere else to look, or if anyone has experience with a particular brand. Living in Vermont, I'd like it to be able to take some snow load.

In the fine tradition of Vermont hill farms, there is an old foundation up the hill a bit that held a barn at some point, likely burned down and then became the property dump. Was able to clear it out and would like to use that spot as the floor for the shelter.

Any ideas appreciated. Thanks!

Temporary shelter+Vermont=waste of money.I have seen even the better ones come down unless you keep the snow off of them.

I was thinking about that; my job is fairly seasonal in that I have a pest control business. Go like crazy all summer, slows down during the winter. Point being that I don't have time to get into a building project right now, but I will have time to keep snow off of the shelter during the winter. Or hopefully by that time the awning will be up.

Thanks

Welcome.

If you are using Google Chrome, this search works well with TBN (delete the spaces between the www):

site:w w w.tractorbynet.com "search terms"

I use it to find TBN threads or topics that I know are, or may be, there somewhere.

Might check with Farmtek. They have a brand and I want to think its manufactured in your area. I could be wrong.

We have had a couple of years of record snow here in Michigan, and a lot of greenhouses, sheds and barns got overloaded. The worst seems to be a couple feet of snow, then rain. That puts a lot of weight on the structure. Seems that the old New England style, with steep roofs have done better than newer pole sheds.

How about a small container? Less $ than good portable.

The more I look at the prices of winter ready structures, the more it seems I should just get off my duff and build the side roof, whatever you call it, off the barn.

Thanks folks

That sounds about right. If you know you are going to build the side roof, may as well do it and skip the temporary shelters.

Around here, we call those side roof things a "lean-to".
I have one planned for the back wall of my shop, but the shop roof height makes it too low for the tractor with the ROPS up. So... A lean-to for attachments & the ATV & a portable shelter for the tractor & backhoe attachment.
There are good sturdy shelters to be found, but they aren't cheap. I ordered one today. A "round top", 12' X 28' with a 10' plus door height... $850.00 CDN. Still, a lot cheaper than a wooden pole structure with steel roof.
With a second (white or other reflective) tarp over the cover, the salesman said I could get 7 years out of it, at least, before needing to replace the cover. We'll see about that, I suppose...
If you're interested, I'll get the manufacturers name for you.
The cover is very sturdy looking with a reflective silver/grey layer on the outside surface.
