Was thinking of buying a foam mattress but they ain't cheap. About $1,200 for a King size. Thought I would ask if any here had one and how satisfied you are with it. thanks for the replies.

We have a topper like this one from Sam's.

It works great for us, and it's about 90% cheaper than the "whole hog" version.

I've heard they were excellent for folks with back or joint pain, so my wife and I bought one recently on a 30 day trial basis. (No refunds, but if not satisfied we could exchange it for a conventional mattress.) I'm really glad they had the trial, because we hated it! It was comfy enough when I first laid down, but I tend to turn over a few times while sleeping and the depression my body made in the foam made turning difficult! In fact, one morning when my wife was sore from splitting wood she was unable to get out of bed herself; it was like sleeping in a deep rut. The other thing I didn't care for was I like to sit on the edge of the bed in the morning when putting on my boots...only the foam kept sinking.

There are some here on TBN who swear by them (Bird, are you one of them?) and that's why we gave it a try. But for us it just didn't work out. We now have a plush top conventional mattress and have never slept better.

Do yourself a favor and try a Select-Comfort air mattress. I thought my wife was crazy for spending so much for it about 15 years ago, but i wouldn't ( can't ) sleep on anything else now. I don't know what they cost now, but i believe they were around $700.00 back then. I think they give you a free in home trial period. I have back problems and this mattress is the best by far.

Since I'm an insomniac and relish any sleep I can get, I looked long and hard for the most comfortable mattress I could find. After doing my research online, I went and did the 15 minute "lay on it" test on several mattresses. It turned out that I liked the feel and comfort of the Tempur-Pedic brand mattress the best. The "knock off" brands just didn't feel as nice as the actual Tempur-Pedic.

Now, here comes the warning. The mattress is the most comfortable I've ever been on, but I can't use it! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif The mattress has this peculiar odor to it and I wake up in the middle of the night with a splitting headache! If I'm even in the same room as the Tempur-Pedic mattress overnight, I'll get a terrible headache. I've had it now for almost 6 months and I still can't sleep on it. My daughter loves it. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif I'm still hoping that one day it will finally "air out" and I can use it.

I called Tempur-Pedic and they are aware of the smell and what they call "off gassing". They said that most people are not bothered by the "off gassing" of the mattress. Well, I am! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif When I first called them about this, they told me that it would stop the "off gassing" in a week or two. It didn't! I waited too long to take it back, so now I'm stuck with it. Hopefully, one day I'll get to use it. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Pete, same for me. I was a guest at a house where they were very excited for me to use the guest room with the Tempur- Pedic brand mattress. It felt good when I first hit it. About 30 minutes later I wanted out. The pillows, the mattress do not appear to be built for me. They love them though. In the morning they were excited to hear my thoughts of the bed. I lied and told them it was fine. Rat...

I'm familiar with "off gassing" but I never equated it coming from a mattress. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You have to blame it on something and if the dogs not around, blame the mattress.

"Honey, really, it wasn't me, the mattress did it." /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I believe that Bird has a Select Comfort air mattress. I use the same kind with great success.

Yep, Pete, like Ron said, we have the Select Comfort bed and don't think I'd find anything I liked better. My wife has a brother who has the Tempur-Pedic and he says he and his wife love it, but I don't think they've had it for more than a couple of months. We've had the "Sleep Number by Select Comfort" for over 2 years now. And I believe Cowboydoc also has the Select Comfort bed.
