Wired takes a look at why the windows broke. A Physics Analysis of Tesla'''s Shattered Cybertruck Windows | WIRED

TL,DR - They have to make guesses based on what they can see from the videos and speculate at points so they make it clear they don't know for sure, but they do make a guess that the demos where they drop the steel ball from a stepladder onto a window laid out flat, may have allowed the window to move due to flex in the mounting brackets, which absorbed some shock. Meanwhile the window mounted in the "sledgehammer proof" door may not have the same ability to absorb some of the impact.

Why the window did not break while they threw wrenches and other things like that at it in testing, but shattered from the steel ball in the demo, is still yet to be determined. Reminds me of when Bill Gates accidentally demonstrated the BSOD to the world, while doing the Windows 98 launch.

That was funny! I was there and it was the highlight of my trip to COMDEX.

We know the BSOD didn't send Bill Gates to the poor house. :)

The PR value was higher I expect due to the breakage.

Indeed. It imposes a higher tax burden on all of us, while only the higher class can afford a Tesla.

Some members are reported to be paying over $40K for new pickups already.

What does he know, he only built PayPal, SpaceX and the non-governmental or defences contractor space industry & Tesla. By the way its Elon Musk, not Tesla, the company is named after genius scientist Nikola Tesla. In all fairness he's a bit of a salesman in the not so flattering way. But he has built the first US automotive company to achieve any real size since what? Before WW2?

While Musk certainly deserves props for thinking outside the box, as a businessman he's pretty clueless. His current business model is bad enough for a company that makes what is essentially a toy for rich people, its definitely not sustainable.
If he doesn't want his company to become the next DeLorian he needs to get his act together and soon. Ugly, futuristic-looking pseudo trucks may get a lot of press, but if he wants to play in a very competitive field he's gonna need to do way better than that. Even the Japanese automakers, who DO build conventional trucks are relative bit players in that market.

200,000 PRE orders placed on the new truck

each requiring a $100 deposit.

Interesting

That’s one group of 200,000 people I am proud to say I am not a part of!
That truck is Butt Ugly and I can pretty assuredly say with the roof line and shape of the rear you will have a hard time loading it with anything near what I read here as the capacity. I also wonder about visibility?

I'm looking forward to seeing it in person. I'm not ready for electric but I love innovation. No doubt it will need some refinement and it will be fun to see how it does.
