Tesla, electric, has no future when the energy comes from supply driven energy sources such as wind and solar: The environmental burden to produce the battery storage to store all this energy on sunny windy days is too high.

Using the electric to produce hydrogen by electrolysis, may have a slightly lower efficiency than a battery while in use, but the ecological burden, both in use of chemicals to extract rare earth minerals from the soil, as well as the energy required in production, of producing the fuel cell (with a few pounds of platinum in it) is much lower than that of a battery. Furthermore a fuel cell doesnt diminish in capacity over time like a battery does, and can fill as easyvad a gas tank.

For construction machinery or farm tractors, theres just no way to carry the energy for a day of forage chopping, a forager wouldd weigh 60 ton instead of the regular 15 ton...

One can use silage for energy to chop forage it seems. When gas and diesel are no more some will miss it less than others I expect.

I do miss our Zetor tractor since it was the only new one we ever owned but Dave Ramsey was right in his advice to let it go.

Why not put the electricity directly into the EV?

And if storing electricity in an EV's battery is not cost prohibitive then why not for home use too?

The answer is that the incremental cost of generation using traditional means is about 1.5¢/kWh. So spending 5¢/kWh to store in a battery doesn't make much sense. But when some pay 25¢/kWh (New York and California for example) the cost of battery storage is not too shabby. The bulk of Tesla Powerwalls being built are going to California where consumers are saving money by charging the Powerwall at night when electricity is outright cheap by any standards.

Electrolysis is by no stretch of the definition, "slightly lower efficiency". Is so bad the primary source of H2 is natural gas.

"Rare Earth minerals" are not rare. Furthermore these items are not consumed in a lithium battery or electric motor. Therefore are ripe for the picking come time for salvage. The only reason we do not mine "rare earths" in the USA is unreasoned bias by the EPA such as that exhibited by Renze.

Much of the country has T.O.U. billing. Is tallied by the meter. Can be over 20¢/kWh during the day and less than 5¢ at night in some areas.

Am not a student of TVA but not aware of any subscribing utilities using T.O.U. billing, but have seen reference stating TVA bills the utilities based on the time of day stands to reason to bill more during high demand, and less during low demand to encourage those who can to shift their use.

They've replaced the house electric meters with ones that record and report (by radio?) actual usage so its all automated. Peak (5~8 pm in summer) costs a lot more than intermediate hours, with midnight ~ 6 am much cheaper. A friend in town bought a Tesla and signed up to a special EV rate he says pays him a small rebate for power he takes after midnight. Something to do with load-balancing.

We're now living in the future.
