I see possible major problems with battery (only) powered vehicles in storm/disaster etc. evacuation situations...

If they take Elon Musk's Hyperloop, at 800 miles an hour, they will almost arrive before they left

I'm probably being overly pedantic but the Model S didn't start rolling out until '12 so closer to 5 years but I hear your point.

There's a couple things that I think still work in Tesla's favor. First they're the only one with 120kw+ charging infrastructure across the US, Europe and many other parts of the world. I can drive anywhere in the US and know that I'll make it there since they're ~100mi apart along the major interstates. Secondly Tesla is actually a car company second and a battery company first. The other auto makers can ramp up production but they're still going to be constrained by battery supply.

It's definitely going to be an uphill road for them but I think some of the things they're bringing some interesting things to the table(like no dealerships, for one).

They sold a roadster before the model S don’t forget they sold a total of 2450 of them from 2008-2012. Going on 6 years of model S. The auto business in the US is not an easy market to succeed at. Tesla might succeed but Musk has to focus on production of the few cars he can make and worry about building trucks and tractor trailer trucks when he can meet demand. If he cannot meet demand others will build cars to compete. Right now there is no huge market for all electric cars. I don’t do this often but I can drive from the northeast to Florida in 20 hours, you cannot even come close to this in a model S. It would be closer to 25 hours with numerous stops to charge. I can stop once to fuel up and that’s a 5 minute pit stop. Still waiting to see a model 3 on the road. Hardly see any model X’s. Those Falcon doors are a nightmare for Tesla. They look cool but not worth the money wasted on research and development and the cost of building. Regular doors work fine on Audi, Porsche, Mercedes, Cadillac and other SUV’s. Oh ya don’t forget Tesla knows everything you do in your car. How fast you drive, where you have driven etc...

Here are the production numbers for the Model 3. October 145, November 345. These are monthly figures. Musk stated between December 2017-March 2018 they would make 5,000 Model S a week. Yes a week. He has 3 months to boost production, but everyone probably forgot because of the Trailer Truck and New Roadster announcement.

Maybe one of those battery powered vehicles could be used to power the fuel pumps at the service station to pump fuel.

Think that has and is being worked on - since May of 2016
Nissan's Leaf has been configured for V 2 G Vehicle to Grid use- 100 being tested in the UK with help from Enel and I believe Tesla is to from comments made by Tesla CTO JB Staubel

For short term power outages they could be helpful

In other Tesla battery news it looks like the battery installation in Australia is faster at responding to grid fluctuations than other back up sources...

Just wondering on what the NA car companies get for profits.

GM in 2016 netted 9.43 billion. Ford 2016 4.6 billion, Toyota 2016 13.8 billion. I know GM and Ford numbers are after tax. I would assume Toyota was also. Tesla had a rare third quarter in 2016 posting a 22 million dollar profit. It was only the second time they ever posted a profit. The other time was in 2013. Tesla had a loss in the fourth quarter tho, along with the first and second quarters of 2016. So they only had a 778 million net loss in 2016. Here is there chart since 2008. A lot of the recent losses is due to expansion of making the Model 3. Losses were expected, but so was production.

Electric cars and trucks are the future--for the simple reason: petroleum is finite, and it can be used in infinitely more creative ways than simply as fuel. People will appreciate that more as it dries up.

People will buy a teslatruck because it is a teslatruck and they want and can afford it. I would hazard less than 40% of current 1/2 ton truck owners truly need a truck. Add the yukon-denali-escalade-pathfinder-fourrunner crowd doing their damnedest to stay out of a minivan, and its assured.

Torque-wise, the power and response of electricity is unbeatable--trains went there decades ago.

Weight-wise batteries will continue to improve, and probably be discarded for magnetism/induction when it can be done safely.

When it gets to a hard-wired system, continuous physical connection is as robust a design as there can be--relying on multifaceted electron supply chain vs. petroleum supply chain is a smart bet. Electric grid already has more redundancy--even to feed from individual roofs and roadways. Germans produce it everywhere.

Our generation(s) can mince words all we wish--fossil fuel's not running out on our watch. Eventually it will. We already have devised a myriad of ways to get electrons flowing, and will only get better at it.

Tesla pickup: It is horribly ugly concept art--squarely against the aesthetic of a truck or tractor owner--nowhere to set a drink, tool, bundle or firearm without it starting to slide off. People want trucks to look like trucks.

For the aerodynamic loss and range do you think it would lose that much to have some squares?

In the future, they'll ALL have electric trucks, cars and tractors, because crude oil will be a memory, and the only place they'll find the gas and diesel machinery will be in the museum.

Don't for get how many centuries we've been enjoying the internal combustion motor... if we get 2 more having access to fuel(s) as a regular consumer, we'll be doing good!

Happy New Year!
