I think I can tell bad/worn out oil from good/usable oil in an engine by smelling oil from the dipstick, looking at it, and feeling it between my fingers.

I would love to see that..He thinks he is superman now! Cami had the method I would do, aka blotter test, for this method.

Outside of that color most times means zero and smell well, good luck.

No flames, oil burns!

I think I can tell bad/worn out oil from good/usable oil in an engine by smelling oil from the dipstick, looking at it, and feeling it between my fingers.

No scientific tests to confirm this, just want to know if anybody else claims some accuracy doing this.

It's very good at telling the state of the oil but no indication as to the health of the motor...Many used tractor dealers will run a dirty engine with diesel in the sump to flush it/fill it with clean and run it for a few hours to make it look "used" and leave the old faded filter with 100hrs scratched into it to make it look believeable....amazing how it will sell on an auction.....
