I left the house I was born in when I got married. Moving out was like moving to a different world. The only good thing about the old home place was it could grow anything. I grew up playing in Acme Brick Company's clay pit (and losing shoes in the sticky muck). I really didn't miss that old place when I left. After my dad passed, it was up to me to correct all the mistakes he'd made (sub-standard trailer park, letting people dump their trash/junk there, etc.) A neighbor commented to me that the place had never looked so good. He told me I had restored its beauty. That really made me feel good and made the property sell for a very good price.
It took the US Navy to really show me the world, but when I retired, The tug of having my family in Texas and knowing the area was just too much to stay away. What I like about Texas is that it has about every kind of geography and culture. Being neighbors to Oklahoma and Louisiana ain't too bad either.
