Are you kidding? I would assume so. I cannot imagine anyone planting a cottonwood tree anywhere near their house. There was a really big one next door when we bought our current home. The "cotton" would blow everywhere and meant I had to clean my HVAC compressor frequently; finally put an extra screen around it. And the huge above ground roots in their yard made mowing a chore. They finally had it taken down and a stump grinder worked on those roots. As they decomposed . . . . well, there are still holes in their yard.

Also they stink.

Bird,
Huh..........I never have seen this problem with my cottonwood. It's about 70 feet from the compressor by the small pond. Guess all that stuff goes gets blown the other way. Yeah, there are huge roots. I just add more top soil on them when the mood strikes me.

Don,
I never smelled any stink. :confused3:
hugs, Brandi

Nor do I see such a problem. Maybe it's a male/female thing that makes the "cotton". It's a beautiful shade tree for the grandkids's sandbox.
Three cheers for the ASTROS.

Yes, there are male and female cottonwood trees. The one that used to be next door was a female. That's the one that produces seed and the "cotton". We were once in Big Bend and visited a campground that had lots of cottonwood trees, and the RVers couldn't run their air-conditioners without them clogging up with that cotton. If you only have the male trees, no problem. But I'd not sure how you'd tell which is which if you were getting a young one to plant. I'm sure someone must know how to tell.
