I thought everything was part of a NORTH AMERICAN grid, where "they" could readily move around generating capacity.
No, there are different grids. Even with some interconnects, they can’t ship lots of power around.

And that wasn't an ice / freezing rain event .. just low temperatures.
I stand corrected on your point about extreme low temps shutting wind generators down, i'd not seen that cold of temps, and i don't believe -20 is happening in Texas."do you want to pay for winterizing your generation plants for once in a decade or longer occurrence, or are you going to put up with the current conditions."
No, we'd prefer NG power. We have lots of it. The last time it got this cold was 1989 and we had no ice, no freezing rain, just low temperatures.
You should really research the conditions we've faced here .. the last three days .. instead of just sounding like an uneducated loon.
Never mind .. you've got your mind made up.
I hope Washington State is "smart" enough to go total Wind / Solar. Disconnect yourselves from the Western Grid as well .. if your so sure .. of your position.
True ... but the article covered many things, not just that particular event - specifically the technologies that can be incorporated for extreme cold weather operations and to ameliorate ice / freezing rain events.
That technology has existed for better than 10 years ... and has doubtless improved over time.
Meanwhile you got Galveston ordering up refrigerated trailers to hold the dead bodies.

I've got a link you may find interesting.
Outages and Curtailment During the Southwest Cold Weather Event of February 1-5, 2011
Don't know why you would care if Washington state disconnects from Western Grid, Texas has it's own grid. You must have a short memory, my cousin lives in south Texas and she distinctly remembers it happening about 10 years ago. Those NG sources aren't pumping because diesel pumps aren't running and pipelines are freezing, NG power plants are not producing because of failures brought on by low temps. Texas is having a lot of the same issues that California had, but in the summer, and for the same reasons. No incentive to keep regular maintenance, pressure to keep power as cheap as possible, without looking to the future. But go ahead, you have your mind made up and blame the wind generators on the current problems Texas is seeing right now.

“You must have a short memory, my cousin lives in south Texas and she distinctly remembers it happening about 10 years ago.“
2011 got to 17° but no ice, no freezing rain. Huge difference in conditions.
You’ve made up your mind so .. I’ll not try to change it .. since you’re a S. Texas expert.
Peace .. out!
“Meanwhile you got Galveston ordering up refrigerated trailers to hold the dead bodies.”
That’s over the top .. even for you!
Because your too stoopid to realize this is an extraordinary weather event.
Unfortunately, it’s apparently an accurate statement of the present situation in Galveston.
Wish that weren’t so, but my wishes don’t count for jack in this instance.
Nope - I realize it’s an extraordinary weather event.
Not sure why you despise Texas and Texans but .. your crap really gets old.
