Front blew thru here, this morning. The wind is wicked! Hope the temps don't drop too rapidly, 'cause I am working outdoors today. I'd rather be skinny dipping during the summer, than playing in the cold!

And I too vote for fried green tomatoes! That is what I am planning to do with mine! Guess I'll be pulling plants up, in the garden, next weekend. :grumpy:

Have you ever pickled them with hot peppers, celery, etc.?

First snow this winter last night. About 1.5 inches.
Folks near the lake are expecting 6-8" today.

Here's the recipe if anyone is interested.

Dilly Green Tomatoes

Select small, firm, green tomatoes. Cut up into quarters.
Put into sterilized quart jars.
To each quart, add:
1 clove garlic
1 stalk celery
1 hot green pepper
1 head of Dill
For about 8 quarts : combine 2 quarts of water, 1 quart of cider vinegar. 1 cup of salt.
Cook the liquid 5 minutes. Fill each jar to within 1/2 inch from the top with the liquid.
Seal the jars

Thanks for the recipe, Ron. Last weekend (while I was being hammered with gastro-intestinal stress) my sweet wife and grandson took down all my tomato netting and rolled it up for the winter. She collected quite a few "last-gasp" tomatoes before trimming back the vines. Yesterday, she made two more quarts of her delicious Italian spiced chunky tomato sauce. I don't know if there are enough tomatoes to do pickles, but that recipe sure looks tasty. Our problem right now is that our cupboard is stacked with jars and jars of pickles. My wife might eat one pickle slice a month. My grandson likes pickles, but he really only wants sweet or bread-n-butter pickles. I've been giving pickles away because we are just covered in them since my eating habits have been drastically changed for a couple of months.

I don't think we ever canned any green tomatoes, but every time we got to Ardmore, OK, we have to stop for lunch at Louie's Catfish Corner. It's one of those old buildings that you wouldn't consider stopping at if you were just passing through town, but they have an excellent catfish lunch that includes "Green tomato relish"; pretty big chunks of green tomatoes, slightly sweet. Louie's specializes in catfish and Mexican dishes. We've never tried anything but the catfish, although the Mexican food we've seen delivered to other tables certainly looks good. And I don't know of any place with better and faster service. My wife doesn't care for the green tomato relish, but I like it.

My dad would make gallon jars. Good treat over the winter.

When my kids were young they used to beg my wife to make these hot green tomatoes. Even the celery in them is good to eat.
Some years there just were not any green tomatoes at the end of the season, which didn't make them very happy.
Nice thing is, they are very quick and easy to make.
