You planted a sweet gum tree?

Yessir. My parents had two pretty ones in their front yard. I planted one several years ago. After some time it died. The next year a small limb came out of the stump after I cut it down. Now it’s bigger than the original tree. I also have planted chinaberry and some Chinese tallow and from what I can tell most folks don’t like them.

So you just like their ornamental qualities?

The two in my parents’ yard made big pretty shade trees. As a kid my grandparents had a huge chinaberry they would sit under right out their back door. Don’t know about ornaments but I just like those trees.

You planted a Sweetgum and have planted Chinaberry and even Chinese tallow? Man, you are itching for trouble. You want shade...........plant a Cottonwood tree. Sweetgums have swallow roots and the one I took out (true to form with Sweetgums) had a giant tap root going straight out the side. Usually it pokes up above the grass. Makes a nice hinge when it gets blown over. Like Elm trees, Chinaberry tree's roots head straight for your sewer drain lines.

I think it is your grandparents having one that is the key. My Grandparents had Junipers in the farm house yard and that is why I love Juniper trees and bushes, along with Eastern Red Cedar.

Are you kidding? I would assume so. I cannot imagine anyone planting a cottonwood tree anywhere near their house. There was a really big one next door when we bought our current home. The "cotton" would blow everywhere and meant I had to clean my HVAC compressor frequently; finally put an extra screen around it. And the huge above ground roots in their yard made mowing a chore. They finally had it taken down and a stump grinder worked on those roots. As they decomposed . . . . well, there are still holes in their yard.
