That is terrible and very sad.
I keep a can of wasp killer on the tractor just in case I hit a hive brush hogging. I hope it gives me a chance to get away if I ever encounter some.

We get stung a few times each summer while clearing trails by wasps. They look like bee's to me but that what everyone calls them. They dig holes in wet ground for the nests. A freinds of ours was whacking weeds in his yard and got into them. He walked into the hosue and passed out. Awoke three days later in intensive care. Ya, and he wasn't allergic to them. We now carry empi pens with us while in the feild bucase this will catch yp with us some day..

As a teenager I learned the way to avoid getting stung is to hit the dirt. I was moving sprinkler pipe and hit a hive. They swarmed after me, I started to run, and ended up face down in the mud. I didn't get stung.

Several years later, I pulled down some rotten canvas and dumped a whole hive on my head. I hit the dirt and did a low crawl away, only collecting a couple of stingers on the way.

After age 70, that may not be an option...

Sounds like yellow jackets to me. Vicious little buggers.

Once was clearing a trail with a friend of mine when I was a kid. Got near a nest and we got swarmed. I got bit worse than my friend mostly on my head of all places, but many stings on my hand. My hand swelled up like a softball.

Gotten stung plenty of times sence, including by yellow jackets, and thankfully, never that bad compared to the first time.

I was mowing once with the tractor and saw a swarm starting to fly around me.  I was in a tight spot so there was no fast way out but I made it without being stung. Drove to the back of the house to escape them flying after me, ran inside, and put on some clothes the bees could not sting through. Took the tracker back to where the swarm came out of the ground, put the rotary cutter over said hole and powered up for a few minutes. No more yellow jackets.

Later,
Dan

This might be the species we see. The do look like bee's. We is also the type that make paper nest under things that at times as large as a basket ball, but they are less aggressive. The ground veriosn will go after you it you disturb there nest or the hole that leads to it.

I opened up a hive of underground bee nest years ago with my open station jd. I ran like he** and luckily the tractor lugged out and died. Got stung quite a few times. I went back late at night and nuked the hive.
I hit another when in my cabbed tractor. They swarmed the tractor...I just kept working. I hate those things. Never know where they are.

That is a good point.

I always look for hives in trees. But the underground hives are more dangerous.
