[friend] was in Sacramento the other other year for work and they had a guy go out to lunch, came back, and he gave his notice. Turns out that the fast food place would pay him more to work fast food than the HVAC industry so he decided to switch "careers". Go figure.
I stopped by a Goodwill near Sacramento recently and saw a banner offering $17/hour starting pay.

Why does that surprise you?
I'm surprised it's that low in CA as we're almost paying that to start in ME and people wonder why everything cost so much

Hopefully everyone at the Goodwill is making $17 a hour.

This is what I don't understand about fast food managers.

When my son started at Panera Bread, he was a dishwasher starting at $10 an hour. After 6 months he started, he progressed to the point where he was doing other jobs. Working the drive through window, making sandwiches and working the cash register. After a year, they gave him a .50 raise to $10.50 and hour.

He found out pretty quickly that they were now hiring people off the street at $12. Other than the manager, he was the longest tenured hourly employee there going on for 2 years. He finally got fed up of people off the street being hired at a higher wage rate, and applied at the Grocery store right down the road.

Thing is, same thing happened at the Grocery store. They hired him at like $12, he did well (to the point he was basically closing up the store by himself) but they never gave him a "title" like they said they would and they were hiring people off the street at $13 with no experience.

Generally, when you have job functions, your pay should be reflected to some extent what your job function is and how much responsibility you have.

Me? If I hire a kid at $12 an hour and he always shows up for work, does what he's told, goes above and beyond what you tell him, the LAST THING I'm going to do is hire someone off the street with little to no experience, and pay them more than the guy who's been working for me for a ayear giving no problems and learning more responsibility and overall, doing a great job. Me, instead of paying a higher wage to a unknown person off the street who may or may not work out, I'd apply a simple raise to the people who I've come to lean on because I know they're dependable.

That said, my boys happy. For whatever reason, he loves working at the car wash, $12 an hour, and when school is done, he can work 7 days a week, bank his money, and apparently he's having fun at work, so in the end, it all worked out for him anyways. More importantly, he's learned a valuable lesson on how you boss can make work enjoyable, or they can drive you crazy when they really don't seem to have their act together LOL

My wife has pretty much every card given to her by our boys and myself over the years in a couple of shoe boxes.

Makes me feel REALLY guilty if I throw something in the burn barrel...
We are plastic shopping bag millionaires. We have so many plastic bags I throw bags full of bags away every time I think I can get away with it.
